...but why would you want to? BURNING MAN IS IN 16 DAYS!!!

Today the Jack Rabbit SQUEALS...EEEEEEEEEEE!!! Happy scurryings-about-the-office are the order of the day, as one by one each staffer jumps ship and heads for the playa. Final meetings, last minute assemblages, package deliveries, supply drop-offs, slightly wild-eyed volunteers -- all swirling around dear receptionist Joy, who holds her post, steady as a rock, while the phone rings and rings and rings and rings!

On the other end, in Gerlach, Nevada...another office full of enthusiastic burners swarms. And more ringing phones and clicking keyboards and squawking radios. And a few miles away, the trucks are rolling, the hammers swinging, the forklifts, uh, forking...while all over the country and around the world, burners are bagging, boxing, hammering, packing and breathlessly dreaming of the moment their greeter says, "Welcome home!"

Typing frenetically and grinning, I bring you much news: the FLOATING WORLD TREASURE HUNT, revealed! Seek treasure, will ye? Should you choose to undertake this mission, you'll be a'wantin' a map to navigate with. You'll get that at the gate, but you can begin to get your bearings now, because the CITY PLAN IS NOW AVAILABLE on the home page! Then, a quick CLARIFICATION ON DMV POST from last week's JRS, in response to a few questions. Burners write with some TRASH TIPS, too. And if you have announcements to make, you can GET YOUR MESSAGE OUT OVER THE AIRWAVES on any one of BRC's radio stations. If you're in Berkeley, and still need a bike? RE CYCLE BIKES can help. Also, a burner's created a great ONLINE FORM FOR RIDESHARES FROM LA AND SF. A little REBAR TIP to round things off (you'll see why that pun was so bad when you read it), and an OLD TIMERS' REUNION for those who first were burned in 1994. PARTICIPATE your brains out with WHALES, FIRE, METAL, MUSIC, WORDS, PAINTINGS, STEAM....you've got to read it to believe it all. Then, EVENTS! Or in this case, a not-event, as STARLUST LOUNGE snarks: "WE'RE NOT HAVING A FUNDRAISER!" Plus fun to be had, films to be seen, and things to be made in SEATTLE, SAN FRANCISCO, OAKLAND, and SACRAMENTO...all in this week's JRS!

If you're not excited by now, I think you're on the wrong mailing list. Did I really say 16 days? (It was 17 when I started this!)

BLACK ROCK CITY NEWS

**FLOATING WORLD TREASURE HUNT**

In the year 2002 the Black Rock Desert will become an ocean, a deep and perilous span, forever filled with the unexpected. At its center is a Lighthouse, upon which stands the Burning Man. Our theme is about how we find our way through the world and what we seek and value in it. Prepare for a voyage of discovery.

Beyond the bay enclosed by our city voyagers will encounter the Unknown. Here you may search for treasure in the form of gold doubloons, the possession of which entitles you to enter the Lighthouse and to climb to the top.

There is another way to find treasure in the Known World within our Bay. The names and locations of participating theme camps will be italicized on our city's map. A sign and hours will be posted at each of these camps. At each camp travelers will undergo a rite of passage and will receive a special token. Each section of the city contains camps with one of the 5 colored tokens necessary to complete the game.

300-255

Pink

255-210

Green

210-150

Orange

150-105

Yellow

105-60

Purple

When you have collected five of these tokens, each of a different color, you will be given a secret clue - a location by longitude and latitude and time. When you arrive at this secret nightly destination you will be able to exchange your tokens for a doubloon, and you will partake of a marvelous entertainment.

You may use your doubloon to gain entrance to our Lighthouse, you may give it away as a gift, or you may choose to keep the doubloon. Under no circumstances, however, is it permissible to barter or sell this coin, nor is it acceptable to collect more than one. This would be unfair to other voyagers who seek treasure. One coin per person is the name of the game. Each coin should represent a unique effort by a single individual. All who enter into the Lighthouse must solemnly swear to the Keepers that they've discovered treasure by their own effort or received it as a gift.

**CITY PLAN NOW AVAILABLE!**

Yes, folks, you can download a PDF of the 2002 Black Rock City plan (with those newly-announced street names!) at http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/02_maps/index.html.

But before you write to ask, no, the theme camp locations are not shown on the map. Visual theme camp maps aren't available until we reach the playa. Why? Because theme camp placement is a dynamic process that changes moment-to-moment right up until we open the gates. When you arrive in Black Rock City, you'll get a packet at the greeters' station which includes a map of the city's theme camps.

Immerse yourself - navigate the 'waters' this year in Black Rock City and begin your adventure!

**CLARIFICATION: DMV POST FROM JRSV6-31**

Just a quick note about a line from last week's JRS about driving at the event. It stated you are not allowed to drive in BRC:

"1. If you are not permitted to drive (with a license sticker from the DMV.)"

This means a sticker from the BRC Department of Mutant Vehicles. It does not refer to the DMV sticker on your licence plates from your home state, which has no bearing on the BRC DMV's sticker.

Thanks!

**TRASH TIPS: SET YOURSELF FREE**

Kimmie writes:

"Each year when I leave Black Rock City my own personal trash consists of one plastic grocery bag of recyclables and a few zip loc bags.

How do I manage this amazing feat?

Burning Trash.

First, I dry out all non-meat food scraps and paper products. I use a little pail stowed safe from the wind. You can also use a dish wash tub with a screen weighed down over it. Hard core avocado cores take only 2 days to dry, most other food even less.

This eliminates the unpleasant task of smelling your garbage as you make the drive home. And you are reducing your contribution to a landfill."

(AG Note: Wander on down to any community burn platform at the end of each spoke street, if you're looking for a pyre on which to conflagrate your dried goodies. AND, of course, do NOT burn toxic trash, such as plastics.)

**GET YOUR MESSAGE OUT OVER THE BLACK ROCK AIR WAVES**

Do you have a public service announcement that you'd like everyone to hear? Do you need to promote a special event for your camp? There's no better way to get your message out to the denizens of Black Rock City than over the radio. There will be over 40 radio stations at Burning Man this year, and we need your announcements and messages to play on the air. Visit the Radio Announcement Drop Box at the following address:

http://www.playadust.com/announcements/

From there, you can upload your recorded announcements or even call and record your message over the phone. Help us spread your message to the far corners of Black Rock City!

**SO LITTLE TIME, SO FEW BIKES*

Runni Writes:
"I know there's always a need for bikes - here's a bike shop that makes Burning Man bikes from $20-$30!

Re Cycles Bike Shop
3134 Sacramento St, Berkeley, CA 94702
Phone: (510) 665-1889

**RIDESHARE TO THE PLAYA: LA, SF, and others**

Webdaddy writes:
"I put together a rideshare form for themecamps in the LA area and by request also created a form for the San Fransisco Bay area. It has several detailed questions to make sure everyone has enough information when they're looking for a ride. It's also updatable so it can be changed as travel plans change. The lists are also sortable on each column:

LA form: http://www.spherocity.com/local/rideshare.php
LA list: http://www.spherocity.com/local/ridesharelist.php
SF form: http://www.spherocity.com/local/SFrideshare.php
SF list: http://www.spherocity.com/local/SFridesharelist.php

For problem or question you can contact me at tkz(at)tkz(dot)net Paul 'Webdaddy' Sundling"

Need a ride to Burning Man?? There are rideshares from all over. Check it out on the the ePlaya!

next week: watch for more rideshare info from Reno!

**KEEP (LEFTOVER) STAKES RARE**

"Greetings LNTs (leave no trace),

One of the best ways I have found to remove those really stubborn tent stakes or rebar is to dribble some clean water along the length of the stake allowing the water to soak the area immediately surrounding the stake. Tap, rap, or vibrate the stake a bit and thne lift it straight out. If the stake does not move when you tap it, add a few more ounces of water and allow it to soak in a little longer. It sometimes helps to attach a short length of rope to the stake so that stakes may be removed while your are standing upright using your leg muscles instead of your back. Once the stake has been removed, carefully refill and tamp the offending hole closed and sprinkle a little water, thus restoring the playa to its natural state. If you're still having trouble removing the stake ask for help.

Daring Dave"

**OLD TIMERS' REUNION**

"An on playa event....for those who lost their BM Virginity in 1994.

If you were greeted by shotguns at the 'gate', drove 100 mph on the playa and reveled at the drive by shooting range in 1994, there's a re-Union for those who lost and gained on the playa that year....please take a couple of hours to meet some of the other 1,000 who burned it with you 9 short years ago.

what: simple cocktail party - re-Union for those who first burned in '94 - please bring a beverage - love to see some photos from that year if ya have 'um (others folks not be turned away, just bring some extra booze)

How to connect:
1) send an email titled Re- Union to codyx(at)rcn(dot)com. Details will be sent before the event - please do this so there is a sense of numbers.
2) Event detail will appear in papers (hopefully the Gazette and Pissclear)
3) locate camp cul de sac (at the burning bell) ask for Cody

when: Thursday evening Aug 29th - before sundown exact time TBD
where: playa location TBD,
why: why not?

**THE CALL OF THE WHALED**

One of the theme art projects rumored to inhabit the Unknown World of Black Rock City is the gigantic Whale. Preconstruction of this mythical creature is said to be taking place in Placerville, California. Word on the grapevine is that volunteers with lighting and sound expertise will be welcomed and treated very kindly. Contact Tom at 530-344-1401.

**BE A PART OF THE BURN! (WELL, EVEN MORE SO)**

SOn the night of the Burn, multiple Processions will leave the sites of the Community Burn Platforms (at the end of each spoke street on the Esplanade) exactly one hour before the Burn. As the columns converge toward the Man, they will form the flaming spokes of a wheel nearly a mile across--THE WHEEL OF FIRE. Bring your lights, your torches, your wildest costumes and join in...

If your Camp or Village agrees to sponsor one of the burn platforms, you will get the right to lead that Procession from there to the Man, and you will be a participant in one of the largest art-pieces in history.

After the Burn, you're invited to lead a procession back again, to be the ones to light the public burn pyre...you can have a mini-burn all your own!

---To sponsor a burn platform, or for more information on the Wheel of Fire, visit www.clevian.com/wheel.htm. You will find background on the project, and plans to construct some really neat flare-torches to lead your Processions. There will also be a flare-building workshop Friday afternoon at Snowflake Village.

Thanks, and see you there (signed)

The Wheel of Fire Project

**COME JAM WITH US**

I'm going to do some Egyptian-themed music at a few cool oases around the playa and am looking for pro or semi-pro musicians to join in; I could use drum and horn players (especially oboe, alto sax, and flute) who are hip to Dm Egyptian motifs. ALSO dancers to help complete the ambience...I hope to do 2 or 3 scheduled performances, so that everybody can improvise and jam enough to really develop a groove. I'll be bringing a self-contained sound, my keyboard with backing tracks on mp3, and plenty of room for improv from other players.

You can check out the basic sound and look of the band here: http://www.musicandlight-unlimited.com/hotepcali.htm

Thanks, Paul Smith Web / Music / Multimedia (408)-535-875

Please reply with some information about your dance/drum experience and if you are interested in the directing positions. This performance will be among the largest burns on the playa this year, don't miss your chance to be part of something very memorable. Creative input is welcome.

AND

The Burning Art Gallery will now be accepting paintings and sculptures throughout the week of the event. The best placements will still go to those who arrive early, but we have devised a way to include everyone who wants to contribute after the trees are up! This is a major development for us since so many of you expressed regret of not being able to come early. So don't leave that artwork behind, bring it out and burn it! You can contact us in blackrock city through the check point salon or from the locator map at the gallery. Please allow us to help you place your art in the gallery as some pieces have pre arrangment.

The Burning Art Gallery

The Burning Art Gallery is a forested exhibit hall on the playa.

We invite those with art to burn to come and display on the forest floor. Paintings and sculptures should be of natural materials. (no plastics of nasty toxics ) We intend to commence construction on August 23rd. We have a curator, structural designers, assembly people and pyrotechnitions in place. This is an opportunity to return creative energy to it's cosmic source. Please come and help us re-charge the cosmos and free yourself from the burden of that art that you just don't quite know what to do with.

Thank You for your inspirations and participation.
