JRS VOLUME #7; ISSUE #22

JRS/7.22/04.01.03

Unsubscribe with the info at the bottom...

As much as I would like to have stayed in Thailand, where the population is about 95% Buddhist, and where every smile on the street was graciously and lovingly rewarded with the gift of another, I have, in fact, returned to San Francisco, because... well, there is work to be done.

I'm talking about be-the-light-you-wish-to-see-in-the-world kind of work. In 145 days, we've got a city to build, a whole community to love, a world to educate by our example. It's more important than ever to keep the fires alive. Cabe's words in the last JRS hit me where it counts, when I read them that week from an internet café in Chiang Mai:

"...all we can say is there's no time like the present to notice what's going on around you and engage with it. As we all know, the world contains pain and death, sunlight and rebirth; sometimes just a few days apart."

I felt this sentiment bore repeating.

This weekend at the Town Meeting, perhaps you'll get a glimpse the volunteer options at the event and realize you view Burning Man as more than just your vacation - and feel, as so many others do, that participation is an opportunity to give this needful world the gift of yourself, and share a vital, enriching connection with others at this critical time in history. And even as we all experience our sorrows now together, I remind you of this: we must, even when it's hard, remember to smile and to laugh.

To that end, I'll be hopping over to the KLOWNEROTICA art event a few blocks away once we've wrapped the Town Hall meeting, to remind myself of the beauty of art and the importance of laughter. This event will feature amazing clowny images from one of the most incredible photographers in the known universe, and, well, if you need a dose of happy in your life, there's nothing like a Klown. Check the bottom of this email near the Soundtrack for the URL.

TOWN HALL POTLUCK - THIS SUNDAY APRIL 6
12 Noon (NOTE: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS BEGINS THIS DAY!!) to 3 PM
SOMARTS Gallery, 914 Brannan (at 8th Street)
San Francisco

Come meet and greet representatives from all the major Burning Man volunteer-seeking teams -- Greeters, Center Café, DPW, and many more! Surely at some past event you've seen someone volunteering and having a great time and you've thought to yourself "I _gotta_ do that next year." This is the year, kiddo. And this is how it starts!

It's actually a really great way to plug into the group - you can wander around, just meeting folks, see who you click with, ask what they do, and if you're into it, there you go, you're off to the desert together. Like speed dating crossed with Survivor. But with barbeques.

Please bring food to cook and share (if you want to eat); we will have barbeques fired and ready. If you want to beverage it up, bring those along as well.

One change from last year: There will not be a Q&A with senior staff, to leave more time for volunteer mingling and wrangling. If you have a question for senior staff, anything at all, email to townmeeting(at)burningman(dot)com by April 6th. The staff will respond in a future JRS.

See you there! (And don't forget the TIME CHANGE!)

DOG POLICY: NO DOGS AT BURNING MAN 2003

Important news for 2003: NO DOGS AT BURNING MAN

Dogs. Love'em and Leave'em at home.

Due to the numerous issues surrounding dogs at Burning Man, the organization has decided that it is not fair to dogs nor other participants to allow dogs at the event. Burning Man staff will also be asked to follow this policy.

The weather conditions and "alien" environment that makes Burning Man the unique event that it is, is not viewed the same by a one to three foot tall, four legged, non English speaking, fur coat wearing canine. The alkaline soil is corrosive to noses, paws and bellies. Dehydration and heatstroke happen very quickly and there is no animal medical service at the event. Pets are also prone to responding adversely to loud noises, huge sound systems, explosions, fireworks and crazy costumed people. Dogs are at knee level to everyone and may not enjoy the screaming, fire juggling, scary ass clown on a unicycle as much as you do. Many animals have been lost each year and problem dogs have caused serious disputes between camps. Complaints from participants regarding dogs at the event include excessive barking, using other people's property as a toilet or chew toy, digging, wandering around unattended and being aggressive to other dogs or humans.

Incidents have increased over the past three years. From a six month old puppy staying at an Esplanade camp with a deafening sound system and trays of chocolate at nose level, to a pregnant dog lost for two days, to a participant that wanted someone (us) to watch his three dogs while he "figured out where he was going to camp", the need to re-state that Burning Man is a self sufficient event is very evident. Dogs cannot be self-sufficient in the desert. The argument "Well, neither are children" can be explained by the simple fact that most participants do not treat their dogs as if they were their children - people don't usually show up and leave their children to fend for themselves in the heat while tied to a bumper, for example. Also, animals do not have the same means of communication as humans and cannot say, "I hate it here but I'll follow you around because you are all I know," or "The dust is burning my nose and eyes," or "The guy in the camp next door kicked me when you weren't looking," or "Some weird lady just fed me whiskey."

This decision to ban dogs was made with the utmost concern for the health and well being of both dogs and participants. This is not meant to be restrictive to participants but to allow them the freedom to experience Burning Man without the worries and stress that full time care for a dog in the desert calls for.

Do not show up at the gate with your animal at Burning Man and expect to be admitted to the event. Reno is a long way to drive back and try and find kennel space during the generally pre-booked week before and weekend of the Labor Day holiday. The best thing to do is to plan ahead and find a petsitter, family member or friend, veterinarian's kennel or boarding facility in your home area that you have visited and feel comfortable with. If your pet will be staying somewhere new and unfamiliar, take time to introduce them (accompany them several times for short visits) to the person or place that will be caring for them while you are at Burning Man and that may reduce the anxiety they may have of being away from you. Remember to leave your veterinarian's information with the caretaker and clearly explain any medication or special treatment your pet needs while you are away.

As fellow participants and animal lovers we thank you for understanding and implementing this new policy. Also, we do recognize that new policies take time to implement and ask for your patience during this process.

E- mail dogs(at)burningman(dot)com if you need further information or have any questions.

TICKET UPDATE: NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS FOR MAIL ORDERS

The JRS and the Ticket Minions are still getting lots of worried emails - "Where are my tickets? I ordered ages ago!" In fact, we are getting more of those emails than usual. And in fact this is because it's taking longer to process than usual.

This is because of the huge onslaught of mail that came from practical participants like you. The first four days of ticket orders brought in thousands of pieces of mail. Unprecedented. Things that came in only a few days apart are going back out separated by a few weeks or more.

We sort everything based on postmark as soon as it comes in, and if you didn't get the ticket prices you ordered, you would have heard from us right away. The tix folks are still working through this stack of initial requests. I know, for example, they sent out over 200 pieces of mail yesterday. Rest assured your tickets will be in hand soon, and you can start planning the rest of your trip!

BURNING MAN IN MODERN PAINTERS MAGAZINE

The spring issue of Modern Painters, a British art magazine, is devoted to the art of the American West Coast, and includes an interview with Larry Harvey and LadyBee titled "A Great Space". The print issue includes photographs of the man, the city plan, Michael Light's "Full Moon", David Best's "Temple of Joy", and Spencer Tunick's "Nevada 1997".

You need to purchase the print version to see the whole article with photos in all its glory, but you can read an excerpt on their website:

BURNINGMANITARIAN AID TO BURNERS IN IRAQ

A group of stateside Burners are organizing an effort to send "burningmanitarian" aid to Burners currently serving in the hostilities in the Middle East. Do you know a Burner currently fighting in Iraq? Do you know someone who does? Wouldn't it be great to show them the Burning Man community doesn't stop at the trash fence, the edge of the Playa, the state line of Nevada, the borders of America or anywhere Burners go, including Iraq?

We don't care what your opinion is of whether the war is just or not; our concern is to show particular support for Burners in action with Playa love in action. The Burning Man gift economy has this opportunity to show what it is made of. Imagine your brother/sister/cousin/friend/FELLOW BURNER getting mail from Black Rock City residents full of wet wipes, chewing gum, moleskin, sunscreen, candy etc etc - enough for themselves and half their platoon!

SO! If you know a Burner in Iraq and would like to see him or her get loads of mail from veteran desert dwellers as Burners are, please email us at burnersinmilitary(at)hotmail(dot)com with their email and/or mailing address in the service (this info is available from the base they are stationed with) plus some other stuff:
Name (First and Last)
Rank (If service member, Pvt, Lt etc)
Service (If service member, Navy, Army etc)
Email address (If known)
Postal address (If known)
Family contact if known and appropriate

Please clearly state if you are submitting information for yourself or someone else wishing to send care packages or be a pen pal. We will match these people up with Burners who want to send them stuff (see next paragraph)!

Ah HA! - Do you NOT know any Burners overseas but would still like to send Burningmanitarian aid? Then PLEASE send us email at this address instead: writetostuckburners(at)hotmail(dot)com. Tell us whether you want to send emails, letters, care packages, some of these or all of these and we will match you up with a Burner in the Military on active duty. We'll also send you some information about sending stuff overseas to military folks. The rest is up to you!

Please keep in mind- this is not an official Burning Man sponsored idea. These are individual Burners who think this is a good idea and hope other Burners will agree and will help out fellow Burners currently in, well, Hell.

SO please! Don't wait. Get that military Burner's address to us, or send us your address to be matched up and get that care package into a shoebox, tape it up purty and mail to one of the many excellent Black Rock City residents already living (beyond believably) in the deserts of ancient Babylon, voluntarily assuming the risk of serious injury or death by attending that event, making the rest of us look pretty pale by comparison.

Playa hugs to you all;

Burningmanitarian Aid

Remember -

> Names of Burners in the military go to - burnersinmilitary(at)hotmail(dot)com

> To get a name to write to, send packages to, reach out to send us an email at - writetostuckburners(at)hotmail(dot)com

DEPARTMENT OF RUMOR CONTROL
DATELINE: SF, APRIL 1, 2003

I won't spoil all the fun on the many, many great pranks that are making the rounds today, but I will give the answer to this inquiry, which actually rolled around BEFORE April Fool's Day:

A burner writes: "...it was posted to the ePlaya that the Dept. of Homeland Security has requested that the National Parks Service deny all use permits for the Black Rock Desert through 2004, owing to a need for desert conditions in which to train troops. Is this true? I am sure you'll keep us informed, either way. I am worried!
thanks
burner k8"

Breathe easy. It's not true.

The National Parks Service, BTW, are not the entity that administrates the use of the Black Rock Desert land on which Burning Man is held - it is, of course, the fine folks at the Bureau of Land Management. And while we're on the topic of rumors and misrepresentations, the Burning Man Project is not currently, nor has it ever consulted with the Army or any other military agency about survival in the desert.

Have you put a successful call for a photo in the JRS? Frequently after other burners see your request, they write to us to ask if you found the photo and if they can see it! Let us know at jackrabbitspeaks(at)burningman(dot)com, and include where online it can be viewed, if possible. Thanks!

EVENTS IN RENO - GET ON THE LIST!

If you live in the Reno, Carson, Tahoe, Truckee area you should be on the Reno-announce and Reno discussion lists (subscribe info for these lists and the Nevada Announce list are at the bottom of this listing.). Here is some of the stuff you'll hear about:

Saturday evening, May 3 is the Reno Community Skoosh Ink Recompression Party. You are all invited! Here's the latest on it from reno-announce:

***********
As you may know, the recompression party at Skoosh Ink will be Saturday evening on May 3. There will again be Burning Man related art that you can have screened onto your garments, but this year we want to hire a printer so Susan and Dan don't have to spend the entire evening slaving away at the presses. To pay the printer we will be asking that you make a donation that will be split evenly between the printer(s) and the band(s).

One hang-up to that plan is we don't know who the printer is. Do you? We are looking for a printer with silk screen experience. This is a chance to make some money and, if you're good, has the potential to turn into a full time job working for Skoosh. email skooshink(at)gbis(dot)com if you have any leads for us.

***********

Also!!

The Reno Community has been having semi-monthly potluck Gatherings that have been drawing about 12 to 20 folks. They've been held on alternate Wednesday evenings at locations that float from host to host. Starting Saturday, April 5 they will alternate between Wednesday and Saturday; still just two a month. Come join us.
