JRS VOLUME #7; ISSUE #41

JRS:7:41/07.25.03

Hey, did you hear the one about the $1400 package tour to Burning Man?

Yep, this one hit our desks early last week: a URL to a "Travelocity" package tour to Burning Man, complete with "air-conditioned tents" and "front row reserved seating for many popular events..." We knew it was gonna be a busy day. (You can see the page at travelocity.burningtours.com...TRAVELOCITY_289_,00.html)

Sure, since we've seen these kinds of hoaxes around here, (see also: April 1, 2002, the "MTV" hoax:
66.70.3.6/2002.../MTV/), we had it within a matter of seconds, but we knew that as this thing flew from one side of the country to the other, we'd have our hands full helping to calm confused and incensed burners. Messages were sent to the staff and regional lists... but by that time, it had spread like a fire.

So, yes, some of us got had. But we figured now that even the URL itself shows it was a hoax, and WIRED has done a story about it ( wired.com...0,1284,59740,00.html), we'd acknowledge that yes, at first glance we thought, "What in tarnation... !" but, come now... is there really such a thing as "front row reserved seats to the burn"? ;)

On then to this week. Of note: Ticket info for all who are still ticketless... LNT tips and Earth Guardian work weekends... Ladybee's list of playa notables for 2003... headlight tips, invitations, and practically none of my goofy puns this time. (No really.) And as you'd expect at 36 days out, these darn JRS's are getting rather long and meaty... so this week, we'll pick up the pace by going biweekly (or thereabouts), to bring you the news as-it-happens and try to make the whole JRS thing a little easier to swallow (and write.)

... guess it's just THAT TIME of the year!

SIGNS ON THE GATE ROAD - SUBMISSION CALL

Every year the road between the gate of Black Rock City and our Greeter Station is lined with a series of regularly spaced signs. Words inscribed upon these signs form messages that greet arriving citizens. If you would like to contribute a thought, a poem or quotation, please email your submission to signs. All submissions should in relate in some way to this year's art theme, Beyond Belief. The deadline is fast approaching -- no later than the end of this month! We cannot guarantee your contribution will be used, but all will be appreciated. (We love to read them!)

LEAVE NO TRACE - PLANNING TIPS PART 1

It takes thousands of people to create a disappearing city, and the how-to lore keeps growing. The Earth Guardians collect good ideas from camps and citizens, mix in Leave No Trace principles, and pass them along. Heed them. Not only will you reduce the Matter Out Of Place ("MOOP"), you'll make your camp life easier and pleasanter. Email any other good tips you have to us at earthguardians and we'll include them in later installments!

Bring the Right Stuff, Leave The Rest Behind. Figure that everything you bring, you have to take home. Shop smart and pack even smarter to eliminate what you don't need. Have a LNT plan, like earthguardians.burningman.com/clean.html.

Here's food wisdom from a decade on the playa:
burningman.com...lighter_trash.html

Plan simple, easy-cooking, low-dishwashing meals. Bring two-thirds the food you think you'll need. Bring at most two days' supply of fresh food; the rest should be dry, or canned. Experience says you won't feel like doing much cooking. Go heavy on finger foods that don't need individual plates. Bring sturdy cups, mugs, bowls or plates, not styrofoam that will blow all over the playa. Or use paper dishes - food scraps go into your wet trash, dishes go into your burnable trash. Ask visitors to your camp to BYOM (bring your own mug).

Repackage and prepare food in advance. Stock up on a few half-gallon food storage containers and leave the cellophane, plastic wrap, cardboard and other packaging at home! If you bring dozens of small plastic bottles, plan to take every one of them home with you! Better- bring water in big reusable plastic containers plus a few small bottles as personal canteens. Minimize use of glass bottles; those you do bring, keep 'em in camp. For walk-around drinks, use a mug or canteen or plastic bottle. Or a can. There are many good beers in cans! Check out burningman.com...drinks.html to find some. Remember that every little shard of accidentally broken glass must be picked up by hand, by you.

Bring tethers, anchors, containers, and covers, to keep light stuff from blowing away. Make a multi-bin trash holder from buckets (with lids) and PVC pipe or wood. You'll want separate containers for recyclables, burnables (paper and wood), and nonburnable trash. For food waste use a mesh bag, like an onion bag. The stuff will dry up, becoming light and nearly odorless.

Take aluminum cans to Recycle Camp. Burn paper and wood on a community burn platform. Seal the small amount of trash you have left in big plastic bags, or in five-gallon buckets with lids, to take home, or... burningman.com...take_trash.html

EARTH GUARDIANS FROG FARM WORK PARTY AUGUST 5-10

The first work session of the Frog Farm restoration project was a great success last weekend. Earth Guardian volunteers marked the area of restoration and used a kite-lofted camera to take aerial photos of the site.

The Earth Guardians and DPW will be back at the springs from August 5-10 for the hardest work of the whole year. We are looking for any volunteers we can entice to come to the desert for all or part of this time. This will be the big work week before the event -- come help Burning Man give back to the land and build the energy for our restoration work trips during the event.

We need person-power to dig, move dirt, haul brush and sculpt earthworks. We'll do the major earthmoving using the Burning Man Bobcat: removing most of the berm from near the warm outflow pond, making slight depressions and mounds in the ripped up soil and drilling auger holes for tree planting. We'll collect brush and rocks from the surrounding area to make artistic piles for wildlife habitat. If we can find someone with a truck to take up, we'll bring up irrigation materials and brush from the Bay Area.

For more information about the project or to volunteer, contact Andy at restorefrogfarm.

For more information on the Burning Man Earth Guardians visit: earthguardians.burningman.com. And, for more details on the Frog Farm project visit: earthguardians.burningman.com/frog.html

REMEMBER YOUR FIRST AID KIT!

The Emergency Services department wants you to know the following safety information:

-Remember your first aid kit!

Did you know that a large percentage of visits to medical services on the playa are due to simple boo-boo injuries that could have been taken care of in their camp if they had only brought with them a first aid kit?!?

Please bring a well-stocked first aid kit for yourself and your camp mates. If you belong to a larger theme camp of 50 or more people, consider creating a theme camp first aid resource so that everyone in your theme camp can benefit from it. You can prevent an unnecessary trip to medical services and you will be able to enjoy the event better while reducing crowding at medical for the patients who are more seriously sick or injured. Those of you who have been to a busy emergency room with long wait times will know what we mean.

-Stay hydrated!

Remember to drink plenty of water, and to eat salty snacks from time to time so that your sodium levels do not drop to an unhealthy level.

Also, just to remind old and new burners alike, alcohol and coffee do not have the same hydrating effect as water or diluted sports drinks, so if you choose to drink alcohol or coffee please compensate by also drinking more water afterwards to keep yourself hydrated.

Questions can be directed to 911@burningman.com.

BRC BIKE REPAIR DESIRES YOUR SPARE PARTS

Save Our Schools: YOU can help!
Once again, the Pedalphiles at BRC Bike Repair and Divinity School will be on the playa from sunrise to sunset, keeping the wheels of Black Rock City turning. They will be sharing their knowledge of the velocipede, both arcane and mundane, with all who visit the classroom(s). However, to keep the Divinity School up-and-running, your volunteer teachers need the following supplies:

- Random metric fasteners: Got nuts or bolts that you know came off a bike? Bring 'em to Center Camp. We'll gladly find them a good home.
- Wheel nuts: Hey, that's a random metric fastener, you might be thinking, but they get a special call-out, as we never seem to have enough of them.
- Axles: We don't need axles too often, but when we do...
- Quick-release skewers: For some reason, most people seem to prefer a new quick-release over our soon to be patented "bolt-cutter release." Go figure.
- Pedals: Call us pedalphiles. We covet them!
- Crank nuts: We suspect a conspiracy here: every year, no matter how many crank nuts we have, we always seem to need two more.
- Tires in near-new condition: We've already got plenty dead or nearly dead ones, you see.
- Seats: Strangely, every year we get dozens of people that, er... get "bummed" out by their seat. If you've got a spare seat or two (especially big cushy ones), please drop by. You'll make somebody's Burn.
- Welding wire: If you can spare any 0.025 solid or 0.035 flux core, we'd be grateful.
- WD40: We like the NON aerosol cans. Preferably in a 1 gal container, or in a squirt bottle filled from said 1 gal container.
- Shop rags: One can never have too many shop rags.
- Propane tank: Of course it's a long shot, but we sure could use a back-up for our cutting torch. Want to light our fire?

Finally, if you have anything else you think we could use that's not in the aforementioned list, please contact Cyclopath, the Divinity School's headmaster and professed pedalphile (cyclopath). Or visit darkwing.uoregon.edu/~nigel/brc/ to review our Wish List. Thank you!

DON'T GET LOCKED OUT

We rabbits are guessing here, but we bet the BRC Lockout Team's perfect year would probably be one where none of us locked our keys in our cars!

Help keep them chillin' in their camp (and keep yourself stress-free) by bringing an extra key to your car and storing it somewhere safe!

But if you do need to bug these guys, remember - they're a volunteer team. Help support their efforts by checking out the "RESOURCES AND DISCOUNTS" item below.

HOW TO BUY OR SELL A BURNING MAN TICKET FROM A THIRD PARTY?
If you are trying to buy or sell a ticket from someone other than Burning Man please read on.

If you need to change the name of a ticket being held at Will Call - give us a shout to partiserv - we can verify the validity of a ticket, the original price that was paid and help you change the name of will call tickets.

When buying and selling tickets to third parties - PLEASE do not charge the "current going rate" for the ticket. Tickets are sold on a sliding scale to help members of our community be able to attend our fine event. When someone buys a ticket for $165 then sells it for $225 it goes against what our community stands for and is unfair to all parties involved. If you come across someone scalping a Burning Man ticket that way - don't buy it - if you are going to have to pay the full price for your ticket you may as well purchase it from the source, and not encourage scalpers.

Send us your burning questions! We'll see y'all on the playa!

LADYBEE'S LIST: NOTEWORTHY ART ON THE PLAYA

Ladybee says: Our 2003 theme, Beyond Belief, has inspired participants to make more art than ever, with over a hundred theme art projects already registered. Here are some projects, and one theme camp, that have caught my fancy, in no particular order. There are many other interesting works of theme art this year; please go to burningman.com...03_art_theme.html

to read about them.

NO DIVING by Linda Graveline of Los Angeles.
It's about time they let us have a swimming pool on the playa, and in such a pretty open pyramid! I'm looking forward to sitting on the lawn, under the playa stars, watching folks swim and frolic in the water. bank-art.com...index.html

THE TEMPLE OF HONOR by David Best of Petaluma, CA.
Oh really now - just how can he top last year's Temple of Joy????? You'll see... I'll just say that paper has replaced the dinosaur kit parts, and xerox has never looked so good. More is more.

THE TEMPLE OF GRAVITY by Zachary Coffin of Atlanta, Georgia.
The master of boulders returns with a scary exploration of weight, tension and belief. Go ahead, hang around under those immense slabs of granite, you'll be fine! Responsive architecture, with a fiery pendulum at its heart. templeofgravity.com

REVEREND BILLY AND THE CHURCH OF STOP SHOPPING interrupt their good works at the Disney Store in Times Square, assorted Wal-marts, and Starbucks everywhere to travel from their home, New York City, to the playa. They'll rock our community every evening at sunset, at the man, with their message of anti-consumerism and peace. What happens when you drop a group of urban gospel singers led by a performance art preacher onto the playa for a week? We'll find out! CAN YOU SING AND SHOUT "STOP SHOPPING!!!!"? revbilly.com

CAROUSEL NUMINOUS by Jenny Byrd and Mosbaugh of San Francisco Get dizzy as you spin through the world's religions in a devil mobile or an angel cart, whipped into spiritual ecstasy. It's a treat to see really good paintings on the playa, and you'll see twelve here, four at the center of each of three carousels. Check them out here: jennybirdart.com. Love those bunny-headed women, and the babes peeing on cupcakes. Wander around some great linked sites, like Mosbaugh's: violetshivers.com/John/.

SATYRS' BACCHANAL by the Mystic Krewe of Satyrs of New Orleans, Louisiana One thing I can't live without is the annual Friday night Mardi Gras-style parade from the Satyrs' camp to the deep playa, with frenzied dancing to the Xtra Action and the March Forth 3/4 Marching Bands, fabulous costumed creatures, flambeaux-bearers, and raucous revelry led by the giant Golden Ram. Upon its midnight arrival at a secret location, the Ram will be sacrificed by entranced Maenads and all will drink its blood to feel the empowerment of Dionysus.

JOHNNY ON THE SPOT by Saul Melman and Ani Weinstein of Brooklyn, NY Has our Beyond Belief theme summoned the spirit of Marcel Duchamp to the playa? Apparently so, as the world's largest ever replica of a Duchamp object rises in the Wholly Other.
johnnyonthespot.ws. In 1917 Duchamp contributed a urinal signed "R.Mutt" to a New York art exhibit and the readymade art object was born. This 40' replica takes the form of religious architecture and contains, as an altar, a fountain. Sacred or profane? You decide. This project is featured on the official Marcel Duchamp website: marcelduchamp.net.

PILLAR OF FIRE by Nate Smith
While imprisoned in the Mormon Tabernacle this Utah artist made use of his time by inventing a marvelous machine that will create tight and beautiful fire vortexes up to 200' tall at various locations on the playa. But will he succeed in harnessing dust devils and infusing their energy with fire? fire-arts.com

THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER will be recited in full by the beloved Reverend Hal Robbins of San Francisco as he rides in glory on the 16th century Spanish galleon La Contessa. Clashes with sea monsters, a boat swarming with zombies and a dice game with Death are features of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic poem, a classic of English Romanticism written in 1796. As Hal recites, Gustave Dore's illustrations will be projected on La Contessa's sails to the accompaniment of the Xtra Action Marching Band. Performances daily across the playa. "Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink."

BOLLYWOOD! It's a little slice of Bombay in the Black Rock Desert. Watch out for their cute fuzzy neighbors in Bunnywood... and ignore the gorgeous babes down the street in West Bollywood at your peril! These LA divas will bring us Glama Sutra on Thursday night on the Bollywood stage - trying desperately to top Wednesday night's show - Shiva Las Vegas! If you're lucky you'll witness a costumed and choreographed Bollywood dance routine, spontaneously performed at surprise locations on the playa. Om mane padme hum. dragondebris.com

LADY HALF-CENTURIANS SOUGHT

I'm seeking a 50-year-old woman who will be at Burning Man 2003 and is willing to be photographed and interviewed. I'm a documentary photographer, working on a group book project all about women at 50.

I'd love to find a subject that has been to Burning Man before, and ideally is involved in some project at Burning Man. It can be anything, art, theater, theme camp, whatever. The catch is that the subject must be 50, not 49 not 51 but 50-years-old. Having a 50th birthday out there? All the better.

Please contact me, Kendra Luck, if you're interested and I will fill you in on details of the project. kendra or by phone 510-527-1011.

TOWER OF ENLIGHTENMENT SEEKS BOOKS, FIRE SPINNERS, AND MUSICIANS

The Tower of Enlightenment project is looking for Self-Help Books, Musicians, and Fire Performers

The Tower Of Enlightenment is a 33-foot tall replica of the Trinity Atomic Bomb Test Tower, which will incinerate self-help books contributed by the citizens of Black Rock City at this year's Burning Man Festival. Scheduled to burn at 11 p.m. on the Friday night of the festival, the Tower will be ignited as part fire performance show called "Apocalypse A Go-Go", which will go on as the Tower burns and not end until the Tower's collapse.

People are encouraged to bring self-help books to the playa to donate at the Tower. While no books will be turned away, it's requested that people not contribute what are commonly accepted and historically recognized as sacred books, such as the Bible, Koran, Bhagavat Gita, and Torah, nor any books printed before August 6, 1945.

Fire Dancers and Fire Performance troupes are invited to participate, as there will be plenty of room for any who would like to spin. The theme of the show is 'Apocalypse', and the definition of that word is left entirely to the interpretation of the individual performer or troupe.

Musicians are also needed, especially brass players, to perform as part of the live show that will last for 15-30 minutes. For more information or to have any questions about the T.O.E. project answered, please contact BusterFriendly

GOT A CLEU? PROCLAIM YOUR SPIRITUAL IDENTITY!

If you got a Cleu at BM 2002, you can accessorize it this year by adding a charm, bead, or bauble that identifies your favorite mystic tradition.

Make your mystic charm yourself, buy from a local artisan, or search the Internet. Here's how it works: Since drumming is one of my favorite spiritual paths to At-onement, I added a glass bead drum to the center of my Cleu. On other days, I might add a yin yang, an ankh, a fish, a medicine wheel, a 5-pointed leaf, a burningman figure, or whatever moves my spirit at that time. If you find a great source for mystic charms, let us know. Even though we follow different paths, we are all One. Take your favorite mystic tradition beyond belief-- see it reflected in the many traditions represented at BM 2003. Get a clue! We are Consciousness, Life, Earth, Universe. We are CLEU!

GOT A CLEU? Wear it with your special mystic symbol.
NO CLEU? Come to the Cleu Camp at 3:45 and Vision.
OR GET A CLEU at consciouslife.org.

MINIMIZE HEADLIGHT POLLUTION

We have received several notes asking if we can encourage a dark sky to permit stargazing on our moonless playa. It's hard to imagine burners without their light (or organizing such a thing around dear old "playa time" in a city where a lot of us take off our watches) but we are aware of at least one stargazing/public telescope project in the works. Even before we announce that, this note from an artcar owner gives a great idea to minimize light pollution - nobody likes being blinded!

Harlan writes: I have operated a "mutant vehicle" the last 2 years and have been shielding my headlights to avoid blinding pedestrians (most people). I have also gone around helping other vehicles tone down their headlights. You might have noticed that vehicles with their full lights on are quite offensive, especially since they are often loaded down in the rear with passengers, making their lights point up even higher into peoples eyes. I feel it would be helpful to all Burners if all the mutant vehicles being registered have a low lighting system for most travel, since vehicles are always going slower than 5 mph, and to have the option to turn on brighter lights if necessary. I do this by putting duct tape or filters over my regular lights and having the option to use my high beams.

JRS Note: I did this to a night-driven cart two years ago - just two strips of duct tape across the front of each light, spaced about an inch apart. Still plenty bright for my ability to drive safely, but much kinder to the eyes of those I was passing. Last year we used standard lighting gels - a pale color like pink or light green works well. But, be sure to test it in a safe place to make sure the driver can still see clearly. Your city will thank you.

GET BUILDIN' WITH REVEREND BILLY

Hallelujah brothers and sisters!

Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir (revbilly.com) will be bringing the Word to the playa as performing guests at Burning Man this year. They'll be holding revivals Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights in the shadow of the man as the sun sets. But before then, they need *your* help and are looking for volunteers who will already be on the playa the morning of Friday the 22nd to help build the church camp. We're erecting a steel shade structure 30'x 60' as well as a 30' PVC dome. If you know how to use a pipe wrench and a crescent wrench, work well with others and aren't afraid of a little semi-hard work (can I get an amen?) contact Brother Satan at jd.

ORFUNNER BURN IN AUSTIN, AUGUST 30-SEPT 1

After an evening of drinking beer at Duby's with 15 or 20 beautiful people, we've decided on a plan for the orphans while everyone else is at Burning Man.

We hereby present:

The Orfunner Burn 2003
Labor Day weekend, Thurs-Monday
Recreation Plantation
$25 per person

Typical burner rules apply.

Volunteers are needed to fill greeter and ranger shifts. Shaven Apes may be needed. A Stage lead would be nice. More details here: plasmator.net/orfunner

THE LOCKOUT TEAM CAN HELP YOU SHINE

When you lock your keys in the car, who ya gonna call?
The Lockout Team!
When you need "glow" on the playa, who ya gonna call?
The Lockout Team!

That's right, the BRC Lockout Team is still in need of more equipment to aid us in our lockout duties - so we are now selling "Glow" for fundraising. We have glow sticks, bracelets, necklaces and LED items for your nightly BM fun! Please stop by and visit our site to read up on playa key-care and buy glow or donate to the Lockout Team! REBAR PULLER

Dave Klaus writes: This is just a product-tip that may be useful to others. I have found the best way to pull rebar is to get a Stakepuller. It is a hand-tool available from stakepuller.com : it's a lever type tool.

You only need the smaller version, which costs $115. Last year our camp (RECHARGE!!!) got one, and it was really excellent. We pulled rebar literally without effort, and therefore without injury...We also roamed around a pulled a bunch of other people's rebar, just for fun!! It's a bit of money, but if your camp has a lot of rebar, it is so worth it, and you can use it year after year.

I should add that I have no financial interest in this deal at all. But it's a great tool.

CUSTOM PLAYACYCLES

I have been making custom choppers for Burning Man since 2000 and now have a website with them for sale to other Burners. I am a sculptor and furniture designer and would be helped out immensely with my funding for Burning Man by being able to sell some of these totally cool and custom creations to other Burners. I hope you will be able to include a link to my URL for these bikes on the Jackrabbit email. I have one bike on display in San Francisco at Lo-Fi Customs at 1776 Mission between 13th st. & 14th st. It's also on their website at: loficustoms.com...playa.html. Anyone interested in finding out more can check out harlanemil.com/playacycle.html.
Thanks So Much!, Harlan Emil Gruber
