JRS VOLUME #7; ISSUE #48

JRSV7:#48:08.20.03

WHOO, we are filling your mailbox with tips and tricks (3 JRSs in two days!) because we have all been powerless to fill you in any earlier!

No, really. As in no power. Marian and ActionGrl have been out on the playa since last week, and I was in New York, where some NYC burners were calling last week's blackout (which led to neighbors dancing in the streets together by the light of their glowsticks) "Recompression 2003". Now, all three rabbits are on the playa, all laboring lovingly over each little carrot of information we send your way. I'm writing this message in our bustling office in Gerlach, which you can see on your left as you drive (slowly!) through town. It used to be the Gerlach Post Office, and as you can see, is still serving its role as communications hub to the outside world.

This is my first trip out to Black Rock City in the early pre-event days. The Center Camp Café has its side panels up but no roof. The base of the Man is being built, but still no sign of our special 5-story wooden guest. The toilets are here! The streets are all laid out, and the signs are up. The playa is packed hard, but the top has a little crust to it - it's a little like walking on snow after there's been a brief thaw to give it a thin top coat of ice. Just that satisfying crunch with every step.

All that's missing is YOU. Get on out here.

Read on for tips on great events happening all over the playa, important information on what not to burn (synthetics) and how not to drive (under the influence), more on the no-dogs policy, appreciating your postal service, an advance copy of the Black Rock Gazette Gate Edition, how to deliver subliminal messages to 30,000 of your new best friends, and save the date of October 12th for San Francisco, Decompression "Heat the Street Fair" much more!

THERE'S DOOM in THEM THAR FUMES (and ashes)

Thinking of burning stuff at Burning Man?

-Not that camp trash or garbage, right? You are going to Pack it Out. Right?
-Not burning that mangy ratty couch or rug, now encrusted with playa dust either. Yes, you hauled it here and now have no need for it - it's headed for the landfill. Right?
-Then there are those extra long pieces of lumber that were so hard to haul. You'll find room in the truck or cut them up before loading them on to the burn platform. Right?

Hey, this is BURNING Man. But don't we burn everything? - It's part of the ticket price!
THINK AGAIN. Burning synthetics, even camp garbage or trash, and placing oversized loads in the burn platforms, is a serious health risk and causes the nasty clean-up messes and burn scars that cost us year-round toil and grief. The community burn barrels and burn platforms are low to the ground, and produce smoke that is easily inhaled. The low temperature, incomplete combustion emits toxic gases and particulates, including: acid vapors, carcinogenic tars, heavy metals, carbon dioxide, dioxins (almost anything treated, dyed, or painted), and more. These pollutants can irritate eyes, lungs, and our heart tissue. See the Burning Man Web site for more information: burningman.com...toxic.html

Health effects can be much worse if you're a kid or someone with a medical condition. So burning anything but CLEAN UNTREATED WOOD and PAPER is a really bad idea. It's also a violation of our BLM use permit to burn synthetics or anything toxic or create burn scars.
nv.blm.gov...burningman/index.htm

We face serious fines and penalties for violations of our use permit and could be denied future permits for our event. There are plenty of alternatives if we Plan Ahead:

Reduce and Reuse.
earthguardians.burningman.com/tips.html,
Don't create extra ash or baked playa
burningman.com...burn_scars.html

Each of us can play a part in protecting the health of our community and the incredible beauty of the playa. We can educate other participants and our neighbors about safe ways to burn at Burning Man. And if we see some clueless or reckless citizen trying to burn something that's toxic or way too big, we should try to stop them.

If you want to volunteer to help educate our citizens about responsible ways to burn, please come by the Earth Guardians Pavilion at Karmic Circle and Esplanade during the event and sign up for our daily crusades or weekend citizen patrols.

DROP INTO RENO TO SUPPORT THE RENO-TO-PLAYA RIDESHARE PROJECT!!

Fred is back online! Don't call him anymore, assume that everything is AOK. If you're a rider, you will have a ride.

IF your fellow burners do their part! The Reno-to-Playa Rideshare Project needs people with room for at least one passenger and gear to swing by the Staging Area in Sparks, if you are coming through Sparks BEFORE Thursday the 28th. Many of these people are Virgins or Burners from other countries - let's show them what the community is all about.

You can do this AFTER you have finished all shopping and errands and are ready to head for the Playa. All riders waiting here will also be READY to go, with no stops/shopping needed.

On 80 east through Sparks, take the McCarran Blvd exit and turn LEFT at the light. Proceed through a few lights to Greenbrae, then make another LEFT. A few blocks later is Breaker, and another LEFT. We are at 1350.

Volunteers are DESPERATELY NEEDED starting Saturday the 23rd. (The Rideshare Project is CLOSED by the 28th and no one will be here.) Help your fellow Participants complete their journey (or, depending on your perspective, begin it.)

WADSWORTH STORE OPEN 24 HOURS FOR PARTICIPANTS

The Rabbits stopped into the Wadsworth store (exit 42, off I-80) yesterday and discovered they'd be open 24 hrs starting Monday, just to serve Burners. Thank them for extending their hours if you do stop in!

*\<>/**\<>/ **\<>/**\<>/ **\<>/**\<>/ **\<>/**\<>/ *

TWO RULES THAT DON'T NEED MUCH ELABORATION

1: Fire hurts. Don't run over or through hot coals or flames. Every year someone thinks this is a fun or free or radical thing to do. But if you trip, or your shoes come off, or melt, you will be severely injured. Stand back and appreciate the light and heat with your eyes, not the soles of your feet. If you see someone lining up to take a run, go say hi, put your arm around him, talk him out of it.

2. DUI is DUI. The rules against driving under the influence of any drug are enforceable (and enforced!) in Black Rock City. Even in an art car going 5 MPH. If you are affected in any way, don't take your 2,000 lb machine out on the playa and assume you can skillfully dodge your fellow participants (who may also be affected, and/or not well-lit). Head out on foot and save it for another night.

TEN TIPS FOR APPRECIATING YOUR POSTAL SERVICE PROVIDER

Many participants of Burning Man (have used the Black Rock City Post Office in the past and many BM participants will use the BRCPO again. This year we'd like to offer these helpful hints to facilitate your use of this facilitating facility.

Top 10 Tips:

10) Be aware that BRC Post Office is performance service art; realization of this fact will make your visit to the BRC Post Office a positive experience.

9) You can send mail on and off playa. Think now of how a delivery can enhance your expression, and incorporate this into your art. How can you increase the number and power of your gifts by using delivery? Remember Summer Camp? Everyone loves a letter or a package!

8) The more exact an address is on playa, including intersection, camp name, individual name, the better chance it will actually get to it's destination in a timely manner.

7) Complaining about the long wait at the BRC Post Office will not speed up the process, and could actually result in a longer wait. Instead, get to know those in line with you. Form a new bond and/or friendship. Maintain this newfound friendship both on and off-playa. Next year send your friend mail utilizing, yes, the BRC Post Office.

6) Hydrate yourself before, during and after the trek to the BRC Post Office to ensure maximum pleasure and benefit from your postal experience.

5) Being nice (including the giving of gifts) to your Postal Relationship Councilors can only expedite your service and elevate your priority at the BRC Post Office.

4) If you want to volunteer for the BRC Post Office in any capacity, it is better to do so now rather than wait until you are on playa. By volunteering now, there is a better chance of doing what you want to do, and more time to get you trained on the proper procedures. Looking now especially for cheer-o-gram, hug-o-gram, kiss-o-gram, song-o-grams, welcome-home-o-grams, and all the other grams you know and love from the Black Rock City Post Office. To volunteer, submit your inquiry to brcpomanagers and be sure to include your NAME (Playa or otherwise) as the SUBJECT, or you will be sent to the back of the line!

3) If the location of your on-playa delivery is at a camp/location without a name, please include what camps it is next to, in-between, and/or across from.

2) Bring all appropriate supplies for sending mail: envelopes, postcards, pens, writing paper, etc.

1) BRING STAMPS for off playa mail! What better gift than an USPS recognized cancellation stamp with Burning Man symbol on your mail! That is a gift that is Beyond Belief! Know the stories behind the art/picture on each stamp to increase your stature within the community. Stamps make a great gift on playa.

If you are a member of the Press, or would like to pretend that you are a member of the Press, and want more information about the BRC Post Office, contact Blue: ageefess

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and we look forward to providing you with performance service art again at BM03.

PACK IT OUT *SECURELY*

Ms. Rachel writes: So imagine my surprise last year when I saw a lovely trail of garbage all the way home to Seattle. I'm not kidding either. I spent several hours on the side of roads picking up other burners garbage and cramming it into what little space my car had left.

So please remind people that tying their garbage to the outside of their cars is NOT the right thing to do. Make sure it is secure in some sort of hard container (like inside the car, trunk, roof bin, etc.) or under a secure rug or net.

[Rabbit notes: Litter is not only unsightly, it can be dangerous if someone swerves to avoid it. You don't want that on your conscience. Additionally, local communities love to support the event, but their enthusiasm wanes when a trail of trash is left in our wake.]

LEAVE NO POOCH: THE NEW NO-DOG POLICY

Howdy fellow Burners, Playa Frog here with a last minute reminder about the new NO DOGS policy. This has been posted on our website since March and on the JRS, newsletter and Survival Guide. If you were thinking about bringing your dog and trying to get in to the event, PLEASE DON'T. Many of you may be boarding your animal as an alternative.

Things to know about boarding your animal:

Boarding at your veterinarian or with a trusted friend or family member in your hometown are the best options. That way, if there is an emergency, you can have backup people to act on your behalf. If your dog is staying with a friend, make sure you leave all veterinary information and if your dog is on medication, leave a detailed instruction sheet of how to administer the medication and at what times.

All reputable kennels and animal hospitals will require proof of current vaccinations: 1. rabies, 2. bordatella (kennel cough) and 3. DHLPP (distemper/parvo/corona). This is for the safety of all dogs and a facility that does not require those vaccinations can be putting your dog at risk.
If boarding at a kennel, find out how many times a day (if any) the dogs are walked. Some places do not walk dogs at all or you may have to pay extra to have them exercised.

With regards to the "grandfathering" issue mentioned, this refers to staff members who spend a lot of time in the desert setting up and taking down the event and for the length of time they help with Black Rock City, and have no other option for their dog this year.

For questions or comments, please e-mail dogs *after* September 9th. We are in the desert until then.

Have a great burn!

TASTY FREE WATER IF YOU'RE COMING NORTH FROM VEGAS

chivo chido writes: A word on FREE water for those traveling blue highways north from Las Vegas. On highway 95, 10 miles west of Tonopah and just a wee bit north of mile marker 46 there is a rest stop called Miller's. The placard says: "As a result of mining excitement at Tonopah in 1901, and subsequent construction of the Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad, Miller's was founded in 1904 as a water station and watering stop on that line..."

It was abandoned in 1947 when the RR went out of business but re-opened as a rest stop, with modernized water station facilities (look for the pump marked "fresh water"). I've hit it three years running and while I can't tell you anything of the PPM (parts per million), it is tasty, plentiful, and hasn't killed me yet. It comes right out of the ground.

Normally I would hesitate sending 30,000 folks to a little desert well, but as I imagine this road is a little less traveled, I don't see the harm in pointing it out as a valuable and FREE resource.

USING BRC RADIALS FOR PLANETARY OBSERVANCE

Try this at home: If you arrive early on the playa on Monday and are literally lingering in the vicinity of Literal at 6:17 AM take a look right down the street toward the Man and you'll see the sun come up right behind him. If you be on Literal a little earlier you might catch a glimmer of Jupiter through the pre-dawn twilight just to the left and a little above the Man. The Sun will literally rise like this with Jupiter just above it throughout the week.

Now our streets have become celestial bearings and sacred/temporary sites of human/cosmic ritual as we find novel ways to honor and worship the old forgotten pantheon. If you happen to be at the Man at sunset on Monday don't forget to give due reverence to the sun's glorious life giving light as he sinks below the mountains right on Revered street at 7:41 PM. Or if you're at all rational at this time and happen to be on Rational you'll see the sun go down right at the end of your street and right behind the Man; an auspicious start to a whopper of a theme.

All week the sun's rising and setting positions inch a little further south on the street dial but essentially adhere to the Literal and Rational/Revered sight-lines that mark its rising and setting positions and characterize the entire week.

The Moon will be hard to find during the week since it is a new moon on the 27th, but it is no less important to know where she is so you can honor her part in the drama unfolding. Her movements will characterize the unique quality of each day of the event. On Monday the 25th she rises at 3:41 AM, and if you find yourself on Sublime at that time Luna will rise right behind the Man. If you miss her first rising don't miss her first setting at 7:05PM on Monday the 25th which must be observed from the Man or from Imagined or Revealed. From the Man's perspective she sets right on Imagined. If you're on Imagined she'll set at the outer end of your street. If you find yourself at that time on Revealed she'll lay her head down for the evening right behind the Man. This is a must opportunity to honor her since she kicks off the week this way and she won't touch upon this Imagined/Revealed theme again, being inclined as she is toward Revered/Rational, Ridiculous, Literal and Sublime for the rest of the week.

PUT THE WIND IN YOUR SAILS, NOT IN YOUR FACE

Got time to kill and an itch towards the perfect camp? Rumor has it that LadyMerv of Asylum has been getting down to the details of her camp, to the point of mapping Asylum in CLAY -- to not only see structures in 3d for ideal placement, but to use a flashlight to check out shade and a hair dryer to estimate wind direction problems! Gosh darned genius, that woman!

For the record: the prevailing wind in BRC is from the south, and the sun tends to rise in the east.

BURNING SKY OFFERS AIRPLANE RIDES

Burning Sky, the skydiver's camp, will return to BRC again this year. As in 2002 we will be offering a lottery for airplane rides over the city, and provide information on how to get aerial photos. We'll also be organizing another giant human art project similar to last year's Human Man. The project, Celebration of Agni, is scheduled for just before sunset on Friday.

We are not mapped, but look for Burning Sky Camp at the intersection of Dubious & Vision, near the outskirts of town by the airport. We welcome visitors throughout the day, and we plan to begin flying Thursday afternoon and continue through the weekend.

We will NOT be offering tandem jumps, so don't ask.

Thanks, Bryan Burke

SUBLIMINATION SEEKS MESSAGES

Carl writes: SublimiNation invites the Burning Man community to submit art, icons, graphics, hieroglyphics, or short text messages for display on its 25-foot-long Persistence-of-Vision display, which will be running every night from Tuesday through Saturday nights, atop the tower in IGS village. The images are visible only when you sweep your eyes or head from side to side (though a small mirror wobbled from side to side will also recreate the reflected image nicely, if you have one). They are best seen accidentally, though, out of the corner of your eye. The URL is: sublimination.org

All submissions should fit in a 144 x 600 vertical pixel image in GIF format. Note that on the display, black should be black and white will be amber, though inverse images will also work. Obviously, images and logos of a commercial nature are not acceptable and will not be displayed, though historical references and parodies -may- be used. We would especially welcome images that are Beyond Belief, of course.

We will also be operating our webserver on the playa, via Playanet, so anyone with a web browser and Playanet access can submit images in near-real-time which can be seen from a mile away.

PREGNANT ON THE PLAYA PHOTO OP

Award winning photographer Tim Timmermans, aka "dogdrum" on the playa, is looking for pregnant women and couples for some beautiful "work in progress" imagery out on the playa. Get yourself a classic and unique portrait that will have significance that transcends the standard studio session by light years. Document a precious moment in time in the greatest setting on earth. A place where the birthing of ideas and thought and creativity is at fever pitch.

Participants will of course not be charged for the shoot nor for signed original prints but will be asked to sign a release. The photographs with be taken and handled with utmost sensitivity with the ultimate goal being the creation of a one of a kind fine art portrait that will touch the hearts not only of the participants, but of any who may see the finished product. I will be camping in Hushville at Dogma and Dubious. My work can be seen here: timtimmermans.com

55-GALLON DRUMS AVAILABLE

I have a number of clean 55-gallon steel barrels/drums available with lids (and lid clamps). Originally used to store liquid latex (non-toxic), they make great water storage/transport vessels, burn pits, etc. They need to be picked up from Downtown San Jose. I'm looking for a $20 donation, but anything is appreciated. The Deviant Latex Lounge is struggling to get to BM this year, as we're victims of a down economy. While many camps hold fundraisers to get to BM, we aren't so fortunate. We provide thousands of dollars worth of product on the playa and every dollar would help us get there right now. So, if you need a water storage or burn pit drum, call Jerry (aka "Six") at 408-971-6366. Thanks and see you at BRC!

RESOURCE FOR HORNS

Worm writes: I surely hope everyone is well on their way to the playa, but I wanted to pass on a great resource I found for really professional and high-quality horns. (Well beyond the standard supply of plastic devil horns typically found. The horns I bought are a high quality and lightweight polyurethane that look totally realistic.) I don't know what your policies are wrt promoting real businesses, but I did a little research on the web and found "Pan's House of Horns" (it turns our they're based out of San Francisco) and really wanted to spread the word about this little gem of a company.

The horns I ordered were done so on a rush (though I didn't get charged rush shipping) and arrived when they were supposed to (I just got them about an hour ago and am VERY happy). I've never dealt with this company before nor have I ever attached horns to my head, so didn't know much of what to look for or expect. The guy I spoke with at Pan's, Jonathan, was extremely helpful, provided a lot of assistance and knows what excellent customer service is all about. For that reason alone, I'd highly recommend them. Anyway - here is his url if you'd like to pass on the word. panshouseofhorns.com Oh, Jonathan mentioned that a lot of his customers have bought his horns specifically for Burning Man, and that they hold up very well on the playa.
