JRS VOLUME #8; ISSUE #08

JRS V8:#8:11.07.03

Unsubscribe info is at the bottom....

Hot hot hot! Here at the office we've been playing with "theme Fridays" (you know how some burners are - any excuse to dress to express...) Today's theme is "Hot". Right now, I wish we had a webcam so you could see the various interpretations this gang has come up with. Truly, I do love this place...and, well, maybe you would too? That's right, there's a new job opportunity at Burning Man. Check the "BLACK ROCK CITY NEWS" section below!

Also in the "BRC NEWS": if you lost any film on the playa, you may be in luck. Each year we develop the rolls that are in the "found" pile we bring home, and attempt to reunite the photos with their photogs. Check the link to see if your missing pics are here in our hands. (Funny thing - I was just looking through these and I think I spotted the back of my head in one of the crowd shots. Man, I miss the playa!!)

Plus, Burning Man art is featured in "Leonardo Journal"... two burners with requests for photos and stories, and information on what look to be VERY exciting (and delightfully participatory!) post-burn events in Seattle and San Diego.

BURNING MAN ISSUE OF LEONARDO NOW ON NEWSSTANDS

The international journal LEONARDO, a publication dedicated to art and technology and published by the MIT Press, has collaborated with Burning Man to publish a special section featuring The Art of Burning Man. In the October 2003 issue of the journal, 20 artists discuss the creative aspects of designing and building art for Burning Man. Among the many art media discussed are fire, water, lasers, LED light, metal, telestereo optics and fractal audio. Each essay is illustrated with a photo of the artwork.

The Burning Man Special Section includes an introduction by Guest Editor Louis M. Brill: "Desert Weirdness Introduces a New Era of Art" and a feature article by Burning Man art curator Christine Kristen (a.k.a. LadyBee): "The Outsider Art of Burning Man."
Artists' essays are divided into four themes as follows:
SCULPTURE - Michael Christian: Flock.
LIGHT SCULPTURE - Radiant Atmospheres: The Afterlife; Tim Black: L2K Ring and Ship to Ship; Jeremy Lutes: The Lily Pond; Christopher Schardt: Spin; Russell Wilcox: Beaming Man.
INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS - Cassidy Curtis and Chris Whitney: The Telestereoscope; Deidre DeFranceaux and Jann Nunn: The Cradle; Hendrik Hackl: The Ammonite Project; Cynthia "Kiki" Pettit: Firefall; Kal Spelletich: The Myth of Sisyphus; Jenne Giles and Philip Bonham: The Ribcage; Dan Das Mann: The One Tree; Susan Robb: The Golden Tower Project; Finley Fryer: The Plastic Chapel.

A NEW DEVELOPMENT IN THE LOST FILM CHRONICLES

This from the unstoppable Bex - you may know her as the Ticket Minion, but she is a year round force:

"Can we include something about the new lost and found film image gallery on the website? People can go to see if we found their film - and email lostfound if we did."

Yes - we gather up all the film turned into the BRC Lost and Found and develop the pics. Otherwise how could we tell the rolls apart?

While not endorsing the activities and tactics of litterers, it may be that the people who lost their film were more likely to be out bouncing around the city and the playa, so they might have some fun pictures. Decide for yourself by taking in the pics at burningman.com...03_lostandfound.html

THE ORGASMOBILE RIDES AGAIN

High Priestess (Maggie) writes: Late Saturday afternoon, just before the burn, I finally managed to get the ORGASMOBILE out on to the playa, much to the delight of the women in the community. She was a pretty little rig, red, gold outside and black and cozy inside. Women could enter, receive a small vibrator (to keep!) and have an orgasm in privacy. I am wondering if anybody has some photos of this ecstatic event to share with me.
Thanks,
High Priestess (Maggie)

Once again, this is a participatory event. Wear your Playa finest and come ready to participate. We still have many openings for bands and DJ's. Volunteer to teach a workshop. Share your knowledge with your fellow Burners; they'll love you for it! You can also volunteer to build an art installation, perform, or any other way you feel you'd like to express yourself.

This is an absolutely free community event for all, but please bring food, water and other provisions for yourself and to share. Potluck will be on Saturday afternoon/ evening. There will be some indoor space to sleep, but this will fill up fast. There will be ample camping area for tents. If you plan on bringing an RV, please RSVP a week beforehand. Art vehicles are welcome, but for stationary display only.

Please contact Jones at spooonreturn for all volunteering, special arrangements, RV RSVP, or any other questions.

Directions to San Diego Decompression
30922 Valley Center Road

From I-15 in Escondido, take the Valley Parkway exit east. (You can cut across at Via Rancho Parkway if you're familiar with the route, otherwise better to stick with this way...) Valley Parkway takes you all the way through Escondido, and then becomes Valley Center Road, so if you just keep heading east about 20 miles, you'll come to the driveway. It gets a little tricky going through Escondido, because the street becomes 2nd Ave for a while (you might not even notice) and then merges again at the Palomar Hospital.

You will also go all the way through Valley Center, past the major lights at Lilac Road and Cole Grade road. Keep going, past the Llama farms! Watch the addresses on the mailboxes. Look for the SDDECOM sign and it is a left turn which can be kind of tough across traffic. Be careful. If you miss the driveway, you'll soon come to North Lake Wholford Road which goes to the Valley View Casino. Turn around there or you'll go all the way down to Harrah's Casino.

When you turn into the driveway, go all the way to the end. There are two other houses you'll see along the driveway, go right past those. Greeters will be present to show you where to park.

Welcome Everyone!
