ADOPT A THEATER SPACE, CREATE AN ALIEN WORLD

Hailing all Space Colony leaders! The Black Rock Observatory is looking for a few more groups to adopt and transform Off-Planet theaters into interactive performance spaces for Burning Man 2004.

Last year, 16 ceremonial niches occupied the base of the Pyramid that supported Burning Man. Participants sat in these niches, assuming the identity of demigods, and interacted with passersby. This year Burning Man will perch atop the dome of an Observatory. The base of this structure will contain ten Off-Planet Theater performance spaces, each one a diorama representing a planet somewhere in the universe. We are looking for groups of people who wish to adopt a theater space, invent a dramatic theme for their alien world, and staff this mini-theater throughout the week. Please view the dioramas at burningman.com...alien_world.html and select one you would like to inhabit.

Performances can be formal or informal, scheduled or spontaneous, but should relate to the overall Vaults of Heaven theme of science and outer space. This is your chance to become the alien you have always wanted to be. There is never a shortage of people wanting to perform at Burning Man, and these theaters are meant to provide the widest spectrum of Black Rock City residents with spaces in which to express and admire the creativity of our community.

Groups that adopt these spaces can be formal theater groups or informal groups of friends or theme camps. We are asking each group to invent five to seven rules of interaction; simple premises that will help other participants - recruited from the public passing by - to join in improvised activity. Theaters may feature some scheduled and scripted performances, however we strongly encourage all participating groups to play with others.

The Off-Planet Theaters will be some of the most interesting points of interaction at Burning Man this year. If you and your group are interested in adopting a theater, creating rules to serve as a framework for interaction, and helping our staff to maintain these performance spaces during the event, we would love to speak with you. Come help the Observatory and its Astral Cosmotologists provide a setting in which you, along with dozens of folks you haven't yet met, can give and create.

If you have questions or are interested in adopting an Off-Planet Theater pleased contact Nambla the Clown, Lead Cosmotologist at off-planet (at) burningman (dot) com. For the longer version from our fearless leader Larry Harvey explaining the theaters in detail, refer to burningman.com...off_planet.html.

SO YOU WANT TO MAKE ART FOR THE PLAYA?

So you want to make art for the playa, do you? Right on - we want you to as well! Now, you may or may not know this, but you can't just build something really cool and plop it out on the playa, without letting us know first. Yeah, I know... life's rough.

It's easy, though. All you've got to do is read our art installation guidelines (burningman.com/themeart) and fill out our on-line questionnaire (forms.burningman.com) by July 31st. We'll give you a call to talk about your piece, and make sure you've got everything you need before you get to the desert.

When you get to the playa, you'll need to check in with us at The Artery in Center Camp, and our faithful volunteers will get you all set up, and take you out to where your installation will be placed. Itís fun, trust me.

We are really looking forward to everybody's creative contribution this year!

2004 PLAYA CALENDAR DEADLINE
WhatWhereWhen Submission Deadline JULY 25

Attention Attention! The Burning Man 2004 WhatWhereWhen submission deadline is July 25.
Please submit your event to the Playa Calendar if you want it to be included in the printed calendar of events, the WhatWhereWhen. The WhatWhereWhen is handed to every individual who comes through the gate. If you want to publicize your playa event, parade, party or what-have-you, please take a moment to visit the Burning Man website and enter your event:
burningman.com/calendar/playa

We want your event in the WhatWhereWhen, so do it before July 25. The Playa Calendar will remain live after July 25, and events added after this date will NOT appear in the WhatWhereWhen.

However, you can still put things in the playa calendar after that date, since many people print it out and read it as they drive across the country. Also, Playa Info and the Digital Directory have options for event post dissemination.

Thank you!

LANDFILL UPDATE

Thanks to Wendell and Joie Freed for this tip! "Just a note regarding dumping of garbage after the burn. The Lockwood Landfill is now accessible from the Mustang exit only. If you take the Lockwood exit, you"ll get all the way to the dump and come to a cable across the road and signs directing you to the Mustang exit. If you still'need to dump at this time, you'd need to drive back to Mustang ( several miles) or to the Reno transfer station. Hate to see anyone take that wrong turn as it is way out of the way."

IF IT WASN'T IN YOUR BODY...

Maybe you all saw the story about a man lighting a cigarette and blowing up a porta-potty this week. (According to the hospital spokesperson, the methane that had built up in the portable toilet "did not take too kindly" to the cigarette lighter's flick.) That's a new one on us, and we don't know if it's a hoax or not, but it's never a bad idea to remind everyone of the three prime directives of potty use in BRC:

- Only Pee Poop and Paper in the Potty
- ONE PLY Playa Paper only Please
- Let the energy flow through the system. Blockage is death.

PADDY MIRAGE RETURNS

The Paddy Mirage is returning to its rightful place with their family in the Black Rock Desert this year. As with most projects' evolution, we are planning much bigger things. This year we are going to build Newgrange (the oldest known communal structure in the world). To find out more go to burntheirishbar.com. There is a virtual tour of what we intend to build on the "Paddy Mirage" page. But, as we come all the way from Ireland, help is greatly needed and appreciated. This is a call for: Wood; Beverages; Astro Turf; Stage Equipment; Large coolers (for beer); Mylar; Musicians; Or ideas/suggestions of where to get any of the above. If you can help with any of these we are forever in your debt. E-mail us on info. We would also love to hear from camps that may want to collaborate with activities. Especially if you will be building the city or some of the interactive art pieces. You look after us, let us look after you. Look forward to seeing you out there.

CAFÉ… STAGE MANAGERS and PERFORMERS NEEDED!

Stage Managers needed to pamper and pander to Rock Stars! Well, not really; everybody's a Rock Star in Black Rock and if you don't believe me, well, you're just plain wrong ;) What the Café Performance Team needs help with is coordinating performers arrivals and departures from the Café. We have sound technicians running the equipment in the booth, but at the same time, we need to have someone to meet-n-greet the new performers as they arrive, take down information after they're done performing, helping them with information on where they can put their stuff, etc. Basically, Stage Managing. If you have this wonderful skill, some stage presence (introducing new acts) and would like to volunteer for the Café, drop me a note. But first, check out our webpage which has all of the info you need:

burningman.com...cafe_performance.html

Here's a quick overview of what this volunteer position entails:

- 4 hour shift (sign up early!)
- helping performers arrive and get oriented
- help performers with technical questions at the stage and in the loading area
- working with the sound technician with on-stage adjustments
- introducing new performers
- thanking exiting performers
- schedule new on-playa walk-up performers

This position is really fun and can be as laid-back or fun and exciting you want it to be. Great opportunity to get to know Black Rock musicians, interact with the Café community and see some great performances.

Please let me know right away if you're interested,or know someone who's coming to Black Rock City and fits the bill of Stage Manager.

Also...
PERFORMERS! CENTER CAMP CAFÉ… MUSIC AND SPOKEN WORD STAGES:

Come extroverts! Come socialites! This is a call to the auditorily apt citizens of Black Rock City, the veritable virtuosos, the skilled savants. Burning Man is hosting a little 34,000 square foot theme camp. You might know of it as "Center Camp Café"? We would simply love for you to bring your swanky style to our CafÈ Performance lineup. In order to pack as much pleasure onto our two stages as possible, we are taking sign-ups posthaste. Over to your left, you'll find the Café Spoken Word stage where lyricists, poets talks shows and other varieties can be found...and to your right the Café Music stage, where instrumentalists, virtuosos and talented musicians from around the world can heard in the shade and breeze. Above you, you'll find aerial performers defying the fundamental laws that govern space and time. And of course, amidst your very selves in the Café you'll find amazing spontaneous, dramatic and engaging performances every day, for seven days and nights in Center Camp Café.

If you sculpt music, paint words, sing motions or you are a disciple of the air, and performing in the Café sounds like a dream then please check out our pages on the Burning Man website. All of the details are there for you to read late late at night in your jammies. Please read this information carefully (maybe some coffee first?) before sending us your information - we worked real real hard on it:

ART GUARDIANS NEEDED

LadyBee writes: one of our funded theme art projects this year is a gigantic (250' long) alien creature that will live in the deep playa, made of inflatable pods.

"A massive object born of the cosmos, Jadu Beta descends into the playasphere. Looming in the distance, animated by the wind, it awaits our approach. Adventure near to this astral body and discover an organism whose form mimics fractal imagery and the architecture of cellular membranes. Tunnel through its thick walls, built of an intricate network of organic shapes, touch its translucent skin, and discover an inner sanctum alive with other-worldly sounds. Space is the primary material for this conceptional entity, a physical manifestation of Inflation Theory. Describing this idea of parallel universes, scientist Max Tegmark writes 'Our universe and contiguous regions of space is a bubble embedded in an even vaster but mostly empty volume. Other bubbles exist out there, disconnected from ours...' "

The artist Saul Melman reports from Brooklyn:

Our fundraiser event in brooklyn last week was very informative. one of the more important and surprising things that we learned is that people are going to climb on the sculpture despite the obvious and permanent destruction they are causing. when asked directly why they were doing things like kicking apart welds between the pods or scaling the structure even though they were causing the towers to fall over or puncturing the plastic with their feet they usually replied because it was fun. (burners and non burners alike). Eventually some people simply tore off a pod from the collection and started throwing it around the room.

Although the pods/structure performed well when people slithered through the bottom-most layer as ws intended, the aforementioned interaction is simply not something that a sealed inflatable structure can handle.

my concern is that the sculpture will be transformed into a 10k pound pile of trash (ironic w/ the leave no trace policy of Burning Man) and/or be scattered around the desert within the first few days of the event. a forest can handle only so much human impact before it is destroyed hence the need for forest rangers. guardians for jadu beta are the only protective option that i can think of that will really work. my crew and i will try our best but we are few and i know we will not be able to appropriately protect the sculpture.

SO! We call upon all of you art-lovers to volunteer some of your playa time to help guard Jadu Beta. You will work with Saul's crew from Brooklyn and New York, and are guaranteed an interesting experience. Please contact Artery volunteer Mariya Shall at shallm. We love our theme art and very much want to protect it. Please help us do so.

NEW YORK - HELP SEND OFF THE VOTERDRIVE BUS

Burning Man encourages participation in the world around you, both on the playa and all year long. No matter what one's opinions or beliefs, a vitally important way to be involved with our world is to participate in the democratic process - and that means registering to vote.

It is that philosophy that will power the Voter Drive this summer. Cory Mervis (7 year burner, New York Regional Contact, and Media Team volunteer) and crew (including co-founder Cabe Franklin, your friendly neighborhood Associate Jack Rabbit) formulated a plan: an artfully decorated bus, driving through over 30 states between July 22 and the end of September 2004, registering voters, speaking at schools, small towns, factories, truck stops, and motivating people to get involved in the political process. They are driven - and driving - to increase Americans' participation in civic life.

The team will be driving a school bus decorated as an American Bald Eagle with "VOTE" letters attached to both sides. In addition to registering voters and speaking on the importance of civic participation, the bus will offer everyone the opportunity to express their views on why participation is important and what our elected officials should be focusing on. Their comments will be uploaded to the Voter Drive website every day.

Their 10,000-mile journey along the highways and byways of America will spell out the word "VOTE" -- and it will be "Biggest Word in History." The last "letter" of the trip will take the bus right through Black Rock City. Look for the bus in front of Media Mecca!
