Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 8, Issue 37
August 20, 2004
rain in forecast.

TODAY I was reminded by Donna in Gerlach that participants MUST drive slow in town. The speed limit is 25 MPH, and not only are there Gerlach citizens and BRC citizens on foot, but many dogs and fuzzy cats. Please respect the speed limits all the way from your default world home and your home on the Playa. Every year we loose someone enroute to or from the event. It's usually driver error: tired, speeding, overloaded rig. Relax, respect the communities you drive through. School starts soon. Watch out.

Black Rock Boutique taking in and sharing clothing donations for your costuming pleasure in Center Camp.

FROM: The Madame of Arson Island Resort. For my playa gift this year, I would like to make a healy/woo-woo/massage map of the playa, to hand out to people in need. I am combing through the registered theme camps, but I don't want any healing camps to slip through the cracks. I would love it if someone from each of those camps could send me an email at amaniellen at gmail dot com, and let me know that they are in such a camp, and include their address. This way, I can include them on my map of healers on playa.

CITIZENS OF BLACK ROCK CITY!!

This is your Exodus crew here with a friendly reminder for you. As the population of BRC grows, it becomes more and more important for us all to do our part to make sure that Exodus goes smoothly. If we all do our part, we can make leaving Black Rock City not only more enjoyable, but safer and less stressful for everyone involved - including the community and small towns surrounding Black Rock City. Sunday and especially Monday afternoon are the times when everyone wants to leave Burning Man. 10,000 people all trying to leave over a few hours time onto one road does not work. If you try to leave then, you will be guaranteed to sit in traffic for hours, deal with traffic jams and merging on packed lanes, and you will be contributing to a big mess on the highway and in local towns. This problem is only getting worse as the population of BRC grows. There is only so much we with the Exodus crew can do to help with this, it is mostly up to all of you to do your part. The problems caused by Exodus on the playa and especially on the highway and in the surrounding communities are becoming a big issue. This is serious folks. If problems persist it could have a serious impact on the event. Please pay close attention to the guidelines below on how to help. Make sure your campmates and friends know this information, and if all goes well, Exodus we be a happy time for all of us.

Here are the things that you can do.
* Read your survival guide for information about Exodus.
* Get gas and supplies on your way into the event, so you don't have to stop in Gerlach and Empire on your way out.
* Make sure your load is SECURE. We don't want your gear or your trash to fly off, litter the highway, and potentially cause accidents and backups.
* Avoid leaving on Monday afternoon and Sunday after the Temple burn. Early in the morning and late at night (with the exception to Sunday night right after the temple burn) is a good idea.
* Perhaps most important, be flexible for when you can leave. Pack up and be ready, and then leave when traffic is light.
* Tune into Burning Man Information Radio, 94.5, and listen for traffic updates and advice on when it is a good time to leave or not.
* Do not stop in Gerlach or Empire on you way out during heavy traffic times, and if you absolutely have to, do your best to do it efficiently and not impede the flow of traffic going through town.
* Make sure your friends and campmates know this information.

If you want to help out with Exodus, or have any questions, write to exodus
Remember to wave a nice good-bye to the hard working Exodus crew, drive safe and have a nice ride back to Reality Camp!

HAPPY BURNING NEW YEAR! BURNING MAN CALENDARS NOW AVAILABLE!!

Ok, so maybe it's not the Burning New Year quite yet, but we still have cause for celebration... Announcing the birth of Burning Man's second ever, annual Burn Year calendar! Starting in September 2004, with 12 beautiful month spreads through August 2005, this calendar will help us plan and dream until Burning Man 2005. Each spread is dedicated to a different theme, such as Fire, Mutant Vehicles, Regional Network, Art Installations, Theme Camps, and much more. The calendar features 84 gorgeous images from 42 different photographers from many years of Burning Man history. In addition to the photographs, this year we have included artist sketches, graphics, and playa artifacts to commemorate the playa creativity all year long.

The calendars will be available at marketplace.burningman.com in the next week, at a few of the stores on the way to the playa, in the towns of Nixon and Empire, and at Burning Man Walk-Up Ticket Outlets after the event.

A team of folks collaborated and worked very hard to create this calendar, and contributions of images and artwork came from all over. We hope you will enjoy it all year long!

Love and Images from CalendarGirl, er - CameraGirl...

PS It is also available on the Burning Man website, at

$teven Ra$pa writes: This idea is fantastic and was conceived by Peter Durand, the volunteer Boston Regional Contact, who is launching it this year on the playa. Ideas like this are rising up out of the Burning Man network of regional contacts to share art year-round and perpetuate more of the Burning Man experience off-playa. The timing is perfect for this! Here's what Peter is doing:

SHUFFLING ART - FROM THE PLAYA TO OTHER REGIONAL EVENTS AND BEYOND!

I am starting a project this year that I'm calling THE PLAYA ART SHUFFLE. The idea is simple: use our community resources already present on the playa to move art off the playa and into the "default" world, so a larger audience can experience and interact with it.

A major goal of the Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) is to "promote a revival of art's culture-bearing and connective function by supporting the placement of interactive art directly into communal settings" where the general public can experience and interact with it--as individuals and especially collectively. BRAF has already helped to fund and move art among community gatherings.

We, the community, can support the goals of BRAF and play a role in expanding the reach of art works created for Black Rock City. By sharing our resources to help transport it, care for it and exhibit it in communities across the globe, we can give these works of art a life beyond the playa and stimulate art exchange on a broader basis. If we can start by shuffling art work from regional gathering to regional gathering, that would be a great. Eventually, we will work toward creating networks that will result in exhibitions of such art work in public areas so as to inspire immediate interactions that connect the art with an even more diverse public.

If you brought a work of art to the playa and would like to swap it with another artist or are willing to part with it permanently or for up to a year, so that it might journey to another region - we would love to hear from you. If you or your group would like to gift space on your trailer, vehicle or container that you brought to the playa to transport art to another Burning Man regional gathering, tell us about it. Want to become the caretaker for an artist's work for a year? Let us know. Do you have a connection to an organization or agency that can assist in exhibiting this art in public spaces?

If you can gift any of the above (or anything along these lines I have not thought of) or otherwise want to volunteer, email boston. Please put "Playa Art Shuffle" in the subject line. Or stop by the Regional Information Center or the Black Rock Art Foundation Camp (both in Center Camp) at Burning Man this year and fill out an info form that will be available in both locations.

Thank you for being a part of this exciting step toward spreading art far and wide!

EARTH GUARDIANS' LEAVE NO TRACE TIPS - BONUS EDITION

How will you dispose of your grey water? How do we burn responsibly and clean?

Our permit from BLM does NOT allow us to dump grey water directly on the playa. Black Rock City citizens have come up with a variety of other methods to collect, treat and dispose of grey water. The simplest method is to collect and just haul the grey water home. Camps with a small amount of water can filter and disinfect their water, then disperse it. An evaporation pond is another solution for medium size camps - it keeps the playa unmuddy and free of human grunge. Some future-thinking camps have even developed technologies to treat and reuse their water.

- Five gallon buckets are good for storing collected grey water to haul off playa. Some large camps have contracted with Johnny on the Spot to collect their grey water, though note that they need to be contacted well in advance of preplaya arrival for this service (and the deadline for this year has passed.)

- If you want to construct an evaporation pond (it's easy!), remember to keep it shallow (4 inches or less), use black plastic, and be prepared to siphon everything that doesn't evaporate. tinyurl.com/4w63b tells how to make one from 2x4's and black plastic. Minimize shower use the last couple days of the event to reduce the amount of grey water that you'll need to collect and haul home.

- Or if you're in a small camp, with minimal dish and body-washing water, you might choose to pour your gray water through a filter or sieve (better, a paint sieve or even pantyhose) then disinfect it. Since it is treated, disperse it on your street to keep down dust. And reuse melted ice from frozen jugs of water in your cooler for use in showering, spray bottles, or squirt guns.

Burn Responsibly: Don't Burn on the Unprotected Playa - Burning Man is all about burning; we've become the experts at LNT Burning. Burning directly on the alkaline playa BAKES the surface into a dark, hard brick-like material. Don't do it. Instead,

- Use community burn barrels or a burn platform. Burn only clean untreated wood or paper and nothing oversized that will spill ash or burning debris onto the playa. Be sure the wood you place in the burn platform is well contained. Don't overload the burn platforms. Have tools on hand to break down and cut up larger pieces.

- Be careful to burn ONLY clean (no paint) wood or paper! You can burn on one of the community burn platforms along the Esplanade, Just don't burn anything that releases toxic fumes - you (or your children) will regret it later! Carpets, cushioned furniture, PVC and other plastics release dioxins, formaldehyde, and other nasty stuff. Please check out tinyurl.com/729rr for more information on the hazards associated with toxic fumes.

- Be a Toxic Avenger! Help monitor the burn platforms to protect our lungs and our playa. Let others know that only wood and paper can be burned here and nothing oversized. Tell them we do this to protect the playa and our lungs. Email toxicavengers for more information.

- Glass does not burn, it shatters. Please discourage anybody with a glass bottle from throwing it into a fire.

- The best practice is to minimize what you bring and plan to pack out the rest. Burn barrels and platforms are not dumps. If you're planning on doing serious burning, be sure to check out tinyurl.com/435df

- CLEAN AS YOU GO!

NEWSLETTER CORRECTION

In our current newsletter, there is an image on page 3, upper right, of the Riding Man - a flaming man on a bicycle. It is credited to Dan Ng but in fact is the work of Jonathan Buckmeister. Dan Ng created the Running Man in 1999. Jonathan was inspired by his work to create the Riding Man. Apologies to Jonathan and many thanks to both artists for their wonderful mobile art projects.

AVOIDING PLAYA FOOT

Herewith, Phoenix's tips on Avoiding Playa Phoot, pharaphrased from previous years. Playa Phoot (Playa Foot, "Oh F*ck? What Happened to My Feet?!") can result from tender skin spending too much time unprotected on the alkali desert floor in an extremely dry environment. Here are one participant's tips on how to avoid it:

Wear wool socks. They give your feet better protection against the Playa. Bring enough, or wash them, to achieve at least one change of socks a day. Each time you change your socks:
1) wash your feet in warm water with soap. Rinse in clean clear water.
2) dry them well
3) coat feet in thick layer of skin moisturizer
3a) pour a little more into your socks!!!!
4) put footwear back on and squish your feet around. (put your socks on first)

The lotion will keep your wool socks and feet moisturized for hours. You won't hear the squish and it actually feels good. You also won't get Playa Phoot. If you don't have warm water, use the warmest you have. It feels good and your feet will love you more. The more you love your feet at Burning Man, the more your feet will love you.

In extreme cases, the deep sores of Playa Phoot can take up to three years to heal, so while you are living in the present, keep an eye beyond what is most immediate.

If you have benefitted from any information here, please spend some time on Friday - Sunday helping any burners whose feet may be in big discomfort.

CRITICAL TeeTS RIDE IN NEED OF "CRITICAL NIPPLES"

Ladies, as you know, the Critical Teets ride has grown by leaps and bounds. We are looking for women who will be riding in CT9 to help us keep the energy up and lead cheers while we're riding. SKYSHOW WANTS TO LOOK YOU UP

SkyShow is looking for more burners to join our fantabulous group of campers!

SkyShow is a new, San Francisco-based Burning Man theme camp building artwork to encourage participants to Look Up! Combining techniques from ancient astrolabes and nocturnals with art, we hope to creatively provide observers with simple keys to unlock, explore, and understand the nightly sky show.

We have a sweet spot on Mercury at 5:00! We offer a 24' dome, a kitchen and community meal system, a shower, a whisper quiet generator, stellar playa art, and a GREAT group of people (some seasoned burners, some newbies; a mix of ages, colors and backgrounds). Now, all we need is YOU!

There are only a couple of weeks left! We meet on Wednesday evenings and will be spending the next two weekends gearing up and making art. We'd love it if you stopped by to meet the crew.
