**133 days, 3 hours, 26 minutes and 35 seconds to the burn!** (Wow. That new countdown clock is sweet!)

We know we say this every year, but the energy that starts building when spring begins to thaw out our imaginations and the hardcore planning begins...well, it's just inspiring. There, we said it.

If those Art Grant projects on the website (see news item below) are any indication, it's going to be an incredible year, too. Something certainly seems to have kindled this community's creativity for 2005 - we're hearing some amazing ideas and plans taking shape from a lot of you, and it's obvious that this will be a BRC to remember. (You know, as opposed to those previous and totally forgettable incarnations. Oh, wait...)

Regional events are blooming, too...returning annual favorites, and new burns alike. Plus we've added new regional contacts (including Mainland China!) and some great new content on our website.

Ah, spring, when a burner's fancy turns to thoughts of (sewing sequins on his entire wardrobe, building a giant flaming brain car, getting the gang together for dome building practice in the park, starting to stockpile bottles of SPF 45...or whatever your fancy little fancy may be turning to.)

To this JRS bunny, though, the thing to love most about about spring might be that now, when I look at the box of playa tools that has remained in my kitchen since September, I feel terribly responsible for preparing so early for my departure...instead of merely guilty of sloth for not taking it to storage for the past 8 months. Go, me.

Here's the news: ticket updates, opportunities to participate, what's new at the website, burners on the radio and in Baghdad, Da Rat's bikes in '05, and a whole lot more.

2005 GRANT PROJECTS ON BURNINGMAN.COM - NEW ART SECTION!

Here are the details and images of the 2005 funded art projects:

http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/installations/05_art_grant.html

They are part of our new Art of Burning Man section on the website: http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/. Theme camps now has its own section: http://www.burningman.com/themecamps_installations/ , and Art Installations is now part of the Art of Burning Man. All the art information you need is now in one section.

...AND SOME NOTES ABOUT THIS YEAR'S TEMPLE FROM LARRY HARVEY

Larry wrote an email to us to elaborate some thoughts about the Temples this year, and we thought we'd let it speak for itself:

"This year's Temple, though built by many of of the same members of the temple crew as in years past, has been designed by Mark Grieve, who worked on last year's effort.

David Best, quite of his own initiative, he has given the entire project over to others, including new volunteers. David will be building a spire sculpture of considerable proportions of his own on the playa this year, but Mark and others are leading this year's effort to create the Temple of Dreams. Really, this is a remarkable gesture. Unlike a normal artwork in the world at large, the Temple has spawned its own community, and David is letting this group continue on to create a new and unique version for 2005.

We've said before that we value art that convenes and creates community. This is living proof of just how efficacious this principle really is. David has now been freed to create and organize the building of new temples outside of Black Rock City , both in San Francisco and in Detroit. (For more information on David's regional projects and BRAF, visit >http://blackrockarts.org/)

What a fertile process gifting has turned out to be! This is not merely art as a form of cultural 'content' or as the work product of an individual artist. Certainly, it's more than art regarded as a mere commodity. It is art functioning as a medium of social regeneration. Is the Temple creating community or is the community creating the Temple? David has contributed his talent as a gift that's making both of these things happen upon an ever-expanding scale. Both he and the Temple Crew deserve high praise. As David's always said: The Temple is yours. These are ideas worth elaborating on, I think." - Larry Harvey

COMING FROM FAR AWAY? DA RAT HAS A BIKE FOR YOU!

For all of you Burners living 1,000 miles or more from Reno, Nv, USA, it's time to consider where you're gonna come up with a bike for the playa. Look no further... Rat's Bikes is about to open for reservations!

Rat says: "For all the newbies out there who (gasp!) haven't heard of Rat's Bikes, here's the scoop. Every year I collect bikes, mostly from returning Burners, and spend all year [except when the snow is three feet deep!] reconditioning them. They get pretty much whatever they need - new tires, tubes, chains cleaned, bearings lubed, shift cables replaced (altho, as flat as the playa is, shifting gears isn't a high priority with me). I try to get bikes to the people who would have the hardest time having a bike on the playa otherwise... the Burners who come from at least 1,000 miles away. I give higher priority to the ones coming in from other countries. The price is unchanged...$40.00 USD, and the bikes need to be prepaid. I accept personal checks or Paypal, and prefer checks. The bikes can be picked up and returned at my house in Sparks (just East of Reno) at nearly anytime, but in order to SEE what you're choosing, I suggest picking them up during the daylight hours. For this year only, I will only be able to provide bikes for people who can pick them up no later than Tuesday, 8/30. Please remember, before reserving your bike(s), that they will need to be picked up here.

I will be on the playa this year [so stop by and say 'hello!'] but I can't deliver any bikes out there. I reserve bikes 'in general', and not any specific bike, which means you'll have "A" bike reserved, but not any bike in particular. YOU get to choose your own bike from the 200 or so on hand. For questions or to make a reservation, you can contact me at: (nv_desert_rat(at)nvbell(dot)net)

I will provide all the driving and payment instructions when we reach an agreement. Don't wait too long! They disappear fast!

Thanks!" - Rat

FREE DRIP PANS FOR UNDER YOUR VEHICLE

Some vehicles, especially older ones (like my '71 Beaver camper, may she rest in peace) do a better job at leaving no trace on the playa if we slide a drip pan underneath 'em to catch errant drops of oil. As long as you weight the pan down so it won't blow away, it's easy to ensure that Bessie doesn't drip any fluids onto the playa's pristine plain. If you're in Northern California, Mamagrrl has the perfect dam for your ride's underside...we like to think of them as "car condoms".

Mamagrrl writes: "Hi, I've got a LOT of plastic skids that we'll be using to hold our generator, for fuel containment and under our cars come this next burn - but I have WAY more than I do cars/fuel/generators - so I'm opening it up to other burners who might live near enough to Redwood City to stop by and take one.

Message me if you're interested and I'll send you the addy to come and get one, or two... or twelve... or maybe 30...

Skids come in red and blue, roughly 2' x 3' (1/4 inch thick) with 2" high sides. Flats are skids with the sides cut off - and I've got several hundred of those.

Anyone got an art project that needs blue plastic? Lots and lots of blue plastic? It grinds well and would make some terrific block prints.

YES, WE HAVE SEEN THE MAP...(WOW!)

Many of you wrote to tell us this, and it made the rounds on a lot of lists!

Google came out with maps. http://maps.google.com

Now, the cool part, you can view them in sattelite images. Now, the cooler part. They caught burning man during set up or cleanup... .make sure you are on satellite view
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=%22black+rock+city%22+nevada&ll=40.755115, -119.247065&sll=40.674645,-119.377441&spn=0.036650,0.063343&sspn=0. 036650,0.063343&t=k&hl=en

(If you haven't guessed, this is pre-event 2003.)

Also, you can see the lines from an older year as well. You have to zoom in, and they are really faint, so look carefully...
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=%22black+rock+city%22+nevada&ll=40.696921, -119.303198&sll=40.674645,-119.377441&spn=0.018325,0.031672&sspn=0. 036650,0.063343&t=k&hl=en

Also, great image of pyramid lake..
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=%22black+rock+city%22+nevada&ll=39.949722, -119.468422&sll=40.674645,-119.377441&spn=0.146599,0.253372&sspn=0. 036650,0.063343&t=k&hl=en

If you look in the right hand corner, there is a link to maps or satellite. Click between them, its too cool.

(This is one good way to tell that folks at Google are burners too...)

SEEKING FOOTAGE OF THE NIGHT THE MAN WENT OUT IN BRC

One night, once upon a time, a Child-Like Burner in his art car with his Liquid Light machine out in front of The Man was minding his own creativity, putting Liquid Light puddles on the Playa floor for other children to dance and play within. The Man was too bright for his colors to penetrate and everybody was having fun dancing with the Liquid Light. It was cool! Many people took stills and video.

Then, as if by Magic or Divine Intervention, the generator supplying power for The Man's lights shut down. Just like that! Phuuuft! Nada! Dark. After a couple of minutes, or maybe even less then that, the Child-Like Burner turned his Liquid Light projector up on The Man and made the beautiful colors morph and dance up and down The Man's arms, legs, torso and head. Many more people took pictures and video.

The child-like burner has photos, but no video. Got video? phoenix(at)rainbowpuddle(dot)com

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: ACCULTURATION ART FOR CENTER CAMP

Art with a Message Call for Submissions Acculturation Art Proposals for Center Camp Cafe

Acculturation: the process of assimilating the knowledge and values shared by a society. Burning Man promotes participation to achieve acculturation. Acculturation is not just for first-timers, nor limited to Black Rock City. Look at how our regionals have grown by sharing their resources, tangible and intangible! This sharing is what keeps our community strong, open, and supportive - on-playa and off.

We call for art addressing acculturation by embodying Burning Man's Ten Principles (link below).

Grants will be awarded to support the creation of art addressing one, two, a few, or all ten principles. This is up to the artist.

Explore these ten principles at

http://regionals.burningman.com/network_principles.html.

A core principle we know and love is Participation: our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

We challenge you to participate in the creation of something that will inspire, engage, question, puzzle, amuse, seduce and otherwise influence the citizens of Black Rock City.

Acculturation art proposals for the Cafe will be reviewed for: -Clarity of the message - Aesthetic presentation - Scale: large enough to read/see clearly with a maximum height of 10 feet (no maximum for exterior placement) -Realistic timeline and budget.

All installations must be completed and in place by opening day of the event, Monday August 29th, and removed by end-of-day Monday, September 5th. A detailed proposal including what Principle(s) will be addressed and how, full budget listing, sketch(es) and/or image(s), and how it will be installed and lit should be submitted to cafe-art(at)burningman(dot)com,

The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2005. Chosen proposals will be announced May 30, 2005.

We will provide limited power supply, lighting, if not included in the proposal, and support and guidance as warranted/requested. Art can be internally lit by the artist or simple lighting can be provided. Free standing art installations are preferred.

Please email any and all questions, puzzlements, concerns and comments to the Cafe Artist Liason: bonnieblaze(at)burningman(dot)com or cafe-art(at)burningman(dot)com

PLAYA ART SHUFFLE - YEAR TWO!

Peter Durand, Boston's Regional Contact, cooked up a great idea last year: instead of all that art just going home and into storage, why couldn't an artist loan his or her art piece to another group, to send it downstream as a gift to be shared with the rest of the country all year? He called it the Playa Art Shuffle, and he'd like to do it again this year! Here's Peter with more:

"Last year artists Sage, Amy and Laurie gifted the art they each brought to the playa to the care of others to allow it to journey to other regions of the country. After having been displayed at one or more events over the year, the art will return to Black Rock City and its creator. The artists can then choose to take their work back home with them or send it along on another journey to another region of the country or world.

This year I hope to see more works from various artists leave BRC in the care of others so that the art can be shared with others beyond the playa.

What's required to make this possible? The type of gifts that are needed are: space in containers, trucks and vehicles to transport the work; individuals that will adopt the art piece for the year and care for it; regional event planners and coordinators that will help get the piece displayed in other cities; artists that are willing to entrust their work to othe care of others so that it can be shared with others beyond Black Rock City; individuals on the playa that will assist in moving and loading the work as needed; and others to generally help out as needed. In a word, there are opportunities for all to be involved in a project that shuffles the art of the playa around the various regions and events that make up our year-round community.

The most difficult aspect of this project is finding individuals or groups that have the space and ability to transport art pieces. So I am asking that if you are able to provide this to please contact me as early as possible. Also, if your camp or region organizes a container/truck to transport your art and supplies to the playa and you would like to gift some space for transporting art to your region, I'd love to hear from you.

If you would like to help with this project or otherwise offer suggestions, I'm looking forward to hearing from you. You can contact me at boston@burningman.com and I will follow up with each of you that contact me.

Thank you for being a part of this exciting step toward spreading Playa art far and wide!"

ROCK OPERA PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR PLAYA PROJECT

Gladiator writes: "I am looking for participants to create a "Rock Opera" to be performed at Burning Man 2005 or 2006. The plays title: 'Oh Boy! We love you, but... A story about Love and Fear'. A statement against circumcision. A spiritual Rock Opera telling the story of a little naughty but innocent boy being born into a misled latex glove society enslaved by unconsciousness and fear. It contains a short lead-in movie, recorded and live music and performance, sensational pyro technics; lots of drums, fire dancers, a 7 foot tall robot, burning kinetic sculptures and a stage on fire. I have already built the robot and I am the gladiator drumming and dancing with him. Please contact me by email: westernskys(at)gmail(dot)com if you have any of this stuff or any info or ideas."

WANTED: ART CARS FOR ARTERY ART TOURS

The Artery is seeking large and safe art vehicles, (capacity of about 20-30) that are registered with the DMV, for art tours. Wheelchair access on the art car is not required but would be a real bonus.

The tour usually takes about 1.5 hours and the art car would provide their own gas and would ideally have a PA or mic on board (bullhorns are also available). The art car operator(s) should contact the Artery soon to let them know that they can commit to driving at least one tour in a sober state. It is also possible to arrange another driver to operate your vehicle if you cannot do so.

Art tour vehicle operators will beblessed by increased playa karma points and knowing that they helped many participants learn more about the art of Burning Man. Thanks for your continued participation!

BURNER ART AT NEVADA MUSEUM!

Judith Selby writes: "Eight portraits from my 'Desert Denizen' series have been selected for the Nevada Triennial at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, July 16- October 2.

Nevada has long been a place for venturers seeking refuge. The first settlers moved West to find a place, unfettered by Puritanical East Coast sobriety, where they would be free to create and recreate themselves. The harsh terrain and the unpredictable weather honed and patinaed the visionary renegades who made Nevada home. Their legacy lives on today in the limitless configurations of human imagination that converge each year on the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada to celebrate the art festival of Burning Man.

For the last five years I have traveled to the Great Basin and the Black Rock Desert where I have come under the influence of the vastness of space and the human elaborations that stand in contrast to the stark desert.

These painted portraits are interpreted from slides of real people at Center Camp, Black Rock City, Nevada. Not ordinary depictions, rather, people as they dress up and dance and enact their archetype. The past collective experience of humanity and its present in the unconscious of the individual person insights the revelations in these faces."
