JRS VOLUME #11; ISSUE #10

Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 11, Issue #10
May 21, 2007

UNSUBSCRIBE: it's easy and DIY - just read the note at the bottom!

One.
Hundred.
Three.

That's how many days until we burn. (Insert excited screeching squealing noise here.)

The JRS scrambles to keep it all together as the news pours in from all over the community about the amazing stuff going down in this year of the Green Man. We admit it, we Rabbits LOVE our position at times like this...we get to hear from all of you nice folks and have front row "seats" to see momentum on projects, regional events (see below for info on Ohio, Colorado, Europe, Utah burns, plus a Precompression weekender in the South Bay...all comin' up!), ideas, info-shares, newly forged collaborations, and more...just wait until you get there this year. WE can hardly believe it and we're already seeing it.

Some updates worthy of your attention: the FLAMBE LOUNGE PRECOMPRESSION has been MOVED!!!! YES, relocated, re-planned, re-everythinged...the previous date of June 2 was just not working out with the venue, so we've moved locations AND dates. Your presence is politely requested at this new date and time! New date is June 9...see below.

Also, the Web Calendars (you know, the Year Round Calendars for events, and the Playa Calendar where you'd normally submit your items for the What Where When) are, in fact, ever so slightly borkened; if you've been trying to log in and keep getting kicked back..you're not crazy, it's just not working. Rest assured, our finest folks are burning the midnight geek oil to get it fixed. Stay tuned.

Notes from the "Green Man": check out the super groovy new Environmental Blog, happily nesting in its new Environment Section home. Every time we look at it there's something new, and that's a very good sign in this year of the Green Man that things are really taking off...there is so much phase-shifting, force-multiplying, get-your-green-on news, we can hardly keep it all straight. (And that's not such a bad problem to have, now is it? Nope.) Check out the latest entries... also in that section, the MOOP map has been posted...see it all at "What's New at Burningman.com" below!)

As for your plans for the playa...well, y'all theme campers best get your games on, because MAY 31st is the new theme camp/placement deadline - and that's EARLIER than previous years, but the placement team needs the time to make all your amazing theme-campy-pieces fit, which is harder than it sounds! We know you've got big plans - now's the time to get them organized and submitted to the team that'll put it all together to make one big, bouncing BRC. Don't procrastinate. Remember also, the Art, Media, DMV questionnaires are all still humming along, and have deadlines of their own. Get on it: http://forms.burningman.com/

Good advice heard on the NY list this week: now's a good time to take out your tent and test it for the season...missing poles and ripped eyelets still have plenty of time to be replaced or repaired!

Off we go.

Eeeeeeeeeeep! Lookit all that news!

RESOURCE ISSUE - SEND IN YOUR POSTS

It's RESOURCES time! In order to keep our regular Jack Rabbit Speaks issues primarily focused on news and events, your Rabbits compile a separate "Resources" issue of the JRS once annually for your playa preparations. This is the place to find links to a wide variety of vendors and sources for your creative and survival needs for Black Rock City.

This year's "Resources" issue is coming up! If you're a vendor carrying an item that people can use to prepare for Burning Man, send your short blurb NOW to jackrabbitspeaks (at) burningman (dot) com AND INCLUDE "POST REQUEST - VENDOR ISSUE" in the subject line, pretty please.

Of course this year, new "Green Man" ideas to help us all reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink, and repair WHILE we prepare are *especially* welcome! Got info on pick yards, scrap warehouses, sources for used stuff? Hit us up! Note: If you have preparation ideas that DON'T relate to buying or selling, but DO encourage reuse/repair/rethinking tips, please send those in ANYTIME and we'll share 'em any way we can. The RESOURCE issue is the place to share info about those things that many of us have yet to acquire in preparation for the week of surviving in the desert...but let's all do this with an eye toward making greener, better decisions this year!

Please keep posts short and plain text (free of formatting), include URLS and contact info, and submit by June 1, 2007. As always, the JRS may edit for length or clarity.

Watch for the Resource issue in early June - plenty of time for your preparation ministrations!

WHAT'S NEW AT BURNINGMAN.COM?

* ART GRANTS ANNOUNCED AND POSTED! - The funded art listings are now up on the website: http://www.burningman.com/installations/07_art_fund.html .

It's another great year for art, and much of it is based on the Green Man theme. All of the artists can be contacted if you want to help with their projects.

* ENVIRONMENT SECTION - NOW WITH 100% MORE BLOG! - The Environment section grows every day, and now includes a great BLOG, full of near-daily updates about the myriad ways that Green Man is manifesting, inside the organization and all throughout the community. Bookmark it and come back often! Today's post: how enthusiastic advocates from within the Burning Man Project lobbied a vendor to change a national policy against the use of biofuels in rental generators...and converted the use of 15,000 gallons of fossil fuels (2006) into 15,000 gallons of french fry grease (estimated for 2007) instead! http://burningman.com/environment/blog

* MOOP MAP POSTED - The MOOP map gives YOU a chance to see how your camp scored during cleanup last year. Playa Restoration took careful notes during their sweeps for '06, noting the levels of MOOP on every block of BRC.... and this map is the result of that compiled information. RED means you left a HIGH IMPACT TRACE; YELLOW means you made a MODERATE impact, and GREEN means you and your camp cleanup crew RULE and pass with flying colors...

The idea here? No, it's not public embarassment. It's giving us all a chance to look, learn, and always be improving, no matter HOW our camps did! Take a look now: http://burningman.com/environment/playa_restoration/2006_moop_map.html

INTERNSHIPS AT BURNING MAN

Much different than volunteering, a key aspect and pillar of the Burning Man ethos, interning is an educational opportunity for someone with specific interest in the areas of Art, City Planning, Media & Communications and Event Set-up [Construction Management & Logistics].

If you are interested in more than one area, you'll have ample opportunity to experience other departments' processes, too. Each area has specific activities and tasks that provide an intern with excellent opportunities to learn.

ART:
The Art department is responsible for everything related to the placement of art and fire installations. Pre-event activities include: Data entry for art project logistics; mapping of art projects; communicating with artists; ensuring accuracy of art information in the What Where When Guide; assisting artists with arrival logistics, and membership on the ARTery team. During the event, the Art department establishes the ARTery, an artist information center assisting artists in finding the location of their installations. The ARTery staff assists with troubleshooting issues, providing supplies and equipment, providing information to the general public, organizing volunteer help, collecting items made for on-playa gifting, and anchoring the Art Tours.

CITY PLANNING:
Work on a small fast-paced team placing all registered camps within the city layout of BRC. Be able to assimilate information from multiple sources and keep track of varying layers of data. Information conduit with a potential for a heavy load of email correspondence. Some writing skills, people skills. Knowledge of databases is a plus.

MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS:
The Communications Department represents Burning Man's voice within the community and to the outside world; a large part of its role is the registration and management of members of the press that come to cover the event. This internship position will interact with that process and experience firsthand exposure to the high-level workings of a busy press operation. On-playa, the activities will revolve around acculturation of the press and videographers who come to cover the event; during the rest of the year, this role will interact heavily with the maintenance and organization of the press/video archives, as well as Burning Man's own mechanisms of communication, such as the Jack Rabbit Speaks and other such publications.

The Burning Man event season (for purposes of these internships) runs from June until September.

The event itself is August 26th to September 3rd. These internships are unpaid, though some expenses may be covered. We are looking for interns who can spend at least 10 hours per week and are willing and able to stay at the event site in Nevada prior to and during the event.

If interested please contact John Prochnow, Administrative Operations Manager at john (at) burningman (dot) com

MORE BIKES - BLACK ROCK BIKES

We thought this email we got from Randy of the Redwoods explains his bike rental service AND his values best, so check it out:

"My name is Randy of the Redwoods. I rent bikes to fellow burners.

I started this after I was left stranded on the playa: after my trusted steed's innards fell out, I picked up all the little balls and parts and asked the bike repair folks to try to fix it. They told me that I had bought a lame horse and that happens a lot, so I loaded up my 'old paint'. I was bummed -- no steed to see all of the sights! I felt a need to do something to help others never get left on the playa from a sick pony - or worse, leave their sick ponies behind for someone else to deal with.

So, I started BlackRockBicycles. I took out a loan and bought 100 bikes -- reliable new cool cruiser bikes -- and rented them. I took any of the profits I made and bought more bikes to provide great, functional bikes to the burners. I also return any additional profits to local non profit organizations in the way of donations of new bikes. I have a lot of bikes given to me all year, so I fix them up and donate them to the Reno Bike project. I donate all of the kids' bikes that I receive to the Kiwanis bike program for kids, and I help them with parts for the bikes. The reason that I have given you all of this information is to ask please, that on your next JRS you would list my bike rental services."

Done and done, Randy, since you asked so nicely and all: check out http://www.blackrockbikes.com

LEONARDO JOURNAL AND BURNING MAN - COMPLETE FIRE ARTS COLLABORATION

The Burning Man Art Department in collaboration with MIT Press' Leonardo Journal is happy to announce the forthcoming release of a special section of Leonardo Journal titled "The Fire Arts of Burning Man". The section contains an introduction by co-guest editor Louis M. Brill and a historic overview of Burning Man Fire Art by co-guest editor and Art Curator LadyBee and a series of Fire Art essays by participating Burning Man fire artists.

The special issue will also be profusely illustrated showing off many of the amazing Burning Man fire art creations that have appeared on the playa. While the Leonardo Journal Fire Arts issue will not be released until early August, impatient Burners do not have to fret about waiting until just before they're packing for the desert to see the issue.

An electronic version with the Brill introduction, LadyBee's Fire Art overview and the 18 essays is available for review now: http://leonardo.info/gallery

When released, copies of this Leonardo Journal will be available for sale the Burning Man Marketplace.

ARTISTS, INVENTORS: EXHIBIT AT THE GREEN MAN PAVILION!

A city is in many ways analogous to a body, and certain areas perform specific functions. The center of Black Rock City is like the solar plexus. Here, within a civic plaza, our community converges, sharing a rich and nourishing flow of constant interaction. The heart of Black Rock City might arguably be found in the Temple, far out on the open playa. This architectural marvel is devoted to the remembrance of the dead. Between these two impressive nodes may be found the base of the Man. This central landmark of our community may be likened to the mind.

In 2007, we will expand the pavilion that surrounds the Burning Man into a 30,000 square foot exhibition space that combines art, earth sciences and technological innovation. Traditionally, this space has been exclusively devoted to art, but the Green Man Pavilion will be different. Our goal is as simple as it is profound: create a visually and sensory rich space where breakthrough ideas and proven environmental technologies can be displayed and interacted with against the backdrop of the world's largest participant-created event. We believe this exposition may well be the only place in the world where such a wide range of technologies and solutions can be displayed in an interactive environment.

Already, many artists are creating works intended to address these issues. Some projects will be small and intimate, while others will be huge. One example is the Mechabolic, a large-scale bio-imitative installation of hydrocarbon based fuel production and transformation. In the artist's words, this piece will, "...take the form of an exploded assembly of digestive and respiratory organs, laid out across the desert floor, and mashed up with their associated mechanical metabolic machines (i.e. internal combustion engines, refining gasifiers, anaerobic digesters, liquefiers, process tanks, condensation towers, etc.)". From the maceration of organic matter to the actual production of fuel that will power some of Burning Man's mutant vehicles, this project will engage the public in compelling ways.

Other artists will address environmental themes through a variety of visual and sensory experiences. We're open to your ideas on how to explore these issues, and how they might be expressed in the Green Man Pavilion. If you are an artist, or if you wish to be one, we are eager to hear from you.

And if you're an inventor, we invite you to participate in re-imagining the world upon the blank slate of the Black Rock Desert. Work with us to show off the best, most innovative, most cutting edge solutions to the environmental problems confronting our planet. Because Burning Man is a non-commercial event, no corporate branding will be allowed in Black Rock City. You may be wondering then, why bother? The answer lies in the nature of our community. Burning Man has long been recognized as a nexus of ideas, information, and culture, a physical collection of human nodes for information exchange. It is a place where artists, innovators, and the media interact like nowhere else on Earth. The old paths of connecting product to consumer are well trod; we invite you to participate in a world where ideas triumph on their merits, not marketing.

This topic of how we fit a greater public world into our temporary one is something Larry Harvey addressed in a cover story published in last year's Burning Man Journal, our annual newsletter. "I think the question we must contemplate is whether our community can learn to apply its unique culture to the world while using worldly tools. How can we do this without muddling our value systems and corrupting both? The choice of how to do this is entirely ours to make," he wrote. Please read the entire article in context.

For participants worried about the preservation of our commercial free environment, rest assured: no one will be selling anything in Black Rock City. Furthermore, the Burning Man Project will receive no subsidies in exchange for displaying innovative technologies. Instead, our environmental exposition will allow you to learn things that you can take back and put to use in your life and your community, continuing the flow of gifts; from artists and innovators to you, from you to the world.

This year's event, perhaps more than any other, marks a quantum evolution in the ways we're taking what we learn on the playa and putting it into real world, practical application. The Black Rock Desert is a very challenging environment, but this journey to desert (and the journey back into the greater world) will be rewarding. You will be the better for having made it. We invite and welcome your feedback, support, comments, and most of all, participation. Welcome to the Green Man.

For information on how to propose a contribution to the Green Man Pavilion, please email greenman-exposition (at) burningman (dot) com

Deadline for proposals: July 1, 2007

EMERGENCY SERVICES SEEKS VOLUNTEER DISPATCHERS

The Burning Man Emergency Services Department (ESD) needs additional experienced emergency dispatchers to help keep our fair city safe.

Are you (or a burner you know) an experienced emergency dispatcher? You know, the one who sits on the other side of the microphone being the calming influence or gently guiding voice coming through the radio for firefighters, police, paramedics, security, or the military? Whatever your branch, you are the voice that many depend on to "keep it all together" whenever a situation arises.

Burning Man's Emergency Services Department will definitely benefit from your skills in our dispatch center and in return you'll get to enjoy the warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you are helping your community. ESD staffs and operates a 911 public safety answering point at Burning Man to handle calls for medical assistance, uncontrolled/unplanned fires, accidents, Black Rock Rangers, law enforcement, and even just the occasional information or paging request.

We staff our center 24 hours a day, starting several days before the event begins and continuing until the last participant has gone home. Every year our dispatch center handles thousands of calls for assistance from staff members, Rangers and other users of Burning Man's radio system. We need skilled and dedicated dispatchers that can make the commitment to show up, stay calm under pressure, and assist in keeping the citizens of Black Rock City safe. If that is you we would love to hear from you!

If you have the experience, skills, and dedication please get in touch with us! Email 911 (at) burningman (dot) com

PS - If you have a lot of HAM net control experience, ARES/RACES experience, or other dispatch experience, keep calm under pressure and are computer savvy to boot, then we can train you to be a dispatcher! In return for your time volunteering you'll get valuable experience to take back to your community organization back home.

RECYCLE YOUR PLAYA PROJECT INTO THE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND!

Speaking of greening the burn:

-Isn't it a shame when you complete an art project and there are all these interesting-looking bits of perfectly useful wood that you have no use for?
-How long have you held onto a steering wheel, leaky boat, slide, or other special piece of a larger work of art because it's just too cool to get rid of, even though you have no plans for it?
-Are you going to destroy a project that could be disassembled, because you don't know what to do with it afterwards anyway?

Well guess what? The Berkeley Marina is home to a rare treasure which needs these kinds of materials - the Adventure Playground.

An adventure playground is a place where children can play with saws, hammers, and paint to construct their own play structures. They are prevalent in Europe and Australia, but there are only a handful in the United States, because of the litigious nature of our nation (though the accident rate at adventure playgrounds is actually lower than padding and bar playgrounds!)

The Berkeley Adventure Playground is currently most in need of certain types of green nails, and tempera paint. However, they are always looking for donations of creative materials such as unpainted, nail-free wood, ladders, slides, pianos, surfboards, mailboxes, whatever!

You can visit the playground to get an idea of what they are looking for (and how wonderful they are), and you can also call them to see what materials of yours they are interested in. For more information, see these links:

Playground website: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/marina/marinaexp/adventplgd.html

An article about the playground, "Family Adventures: Looking for Mr. Dangerous At the Berkeley Adventure Playground" describes it thusly:

"The Berkeley Adventure Playground isn't so much a park as a hippie commune populated by an industrious collective of people under four feet tall."

http://www.noevalleyvoice.com/2002/June/Ther.html

Give your art project another life post-event!

KNITTERS/CROCHETERS - CONTRIBUTE TO CREATING A PLAYA SCULPTURE!

Knit and Crochet Enthusiasts.. UNTIE!

Do you knit or crochet? You are invited to participate in the interactive knit/crochet sculpture, A Tree Undone. Before the event, participants are invited to create and contribute crochet or knit leaves to be added to the tree. On the playa, participants will be invited to UNRAVEL a leaf! At the beginning of its week on the playa, the tree will have THOUSANDS of crocheted and knitted leaves, and by the end it will only have strands of yarn hanging from the branches. Please visit http://www.pokiedot.com for more about the project.

Don't know how to crochet? If you're in the Bay Area, you're in luck! Check the project's website for announcements of upcoming free crochet workshops. If you're in the Bay Area and would like to host a crochet event, or if you have any other questions about the project, please email josie (at) pokiedot (dot) com

ARTIST SEEKS MARKETING "FAUX CREDIT CARDS" FOR ART PROJECT!

Bob writes: "I'm sending this out to ask you all a favor. I am going to create something, not sure exactly what yet, but I'm going to do it in August in time for our event. I'm going to create it primarily from the random, disposable, junk credit cards that we all get in the mail all the time.

You know the ones, they say something like 'Your Name Here'. They come from the likes of American Express (the biggest producer that I've seen to date), Mastercard and other credit card organizations.

You may also get cards that are more paper in texture, sometimes with a light laminate, not the heavy plastic. I'll take those too. Promotional CD's, send them on...

I thought that reusing these cards and CDs spoke to the issue of waste that is produced in an effort to get us all to buy and consume, quite often things that we really don't need and frequently can't even afford. It speaks to the amount of energy that it takes to produce the cards (plastic being petroleum-based) and the energy to move them from one place to another, etc.

So, if you would please start collecting them for me. Put them aside in a safe spot and by mid July, put them in an envelope and send them on. I will make a contribution to Cooling Man to offset the carbon footprint used to deliver them.

If your friends and family would like to help that would be great! The more I can get, the better.

I'd really appreciate help! -Bob"

PHOTOGRAPHER SEEKS LOS ANGELES FIRE ARTIST

Josie writes: "I have been racking my brain to try and remember the name of this fantastic LA Artist who I photographed last year at BM. He spun fireworks and flaming ropes on top of a 50-ft pole beside the Esplanade on Friday night last year. His name stars with a Z. Do you know, or could you find out? Does he have a website?" Let Josie know at josie22 (at) verizon (dot) net

Parsons is currently hospitalized with 3rd degree burns to 35% of his body and remains in critical condition. Parsons did not have insurance and bills are building fast, his air transport alone is over 7 grand! Scorched Nuts will donate $10 to Parsons for every ticket purchased through this link http://www.scorchednuts.com/parsonsticket.htm (there is also a link to make a donation) Please keep him in your thought and hope for a quick recovery.
