Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #28
August 22, 2008
See? We said there might be one more JRS before event, and whaddya know, here it is. Are you guys eyeball deep in playa dust yet, as you dig into your gear closet? Stick your nose deep in that playa coat of yours and give it a good whiff. Feelin' that? We recommend shaking a bit of that dust into your morning coffee, just to start the acclimating process off right.
Many of this year's art installations are starting to take full shape, and we just have to say a) the artwork is seriously great this year, and b) Burning Man artists are an absolutely incredible breed. Your minds will. be. blown. We've just published a preview of some of the art on playa this year in the Burning Blog, together with some contemplations about what it means to create art at Burning Man. Check it out: http://tinyurl.com/6kn9wk
So we've got some important news about ticket sales ... we've extended the deadline for online and outlet ticket sales to make sure people don't get caught with their pants down. BUT TICKETS ARE STILL NOT BEING SOLD AT THE GATE, PERIOD. So buy your tickets beforehand, people! Read on for details, and enjoy some more shout outs for on- playa participation.
Come on! Get on out here! And since we won't be chatting anymore between now and then, may we say: we hope these JRS's have helped you out, and we hope you have a great burn! See you soon.

BURNING MAN TICKET SALES DEADLINE EXTENDED
As previously announced, tickets are not being sold onsite at the Box Office this year. That policy still stands. As is common with the first year of a change in policy, a handful of participants may be caught by surprise as they make final plans. Also, traditionally advance sales have ended the Friday prior to the opening of the event. This was to allow time for the Will Call system to be prepared. Over the past several years we have been working to improve our electronic ticketing system, including computerized Will Call onsite. Our confidence in that system has grown to the point where we can accommodate online sales overlapping with the event opening.
We've heard from Burners working to finalize their plans over the coming weekend, who are concerned about the lack of onsite sales, since they may need to arrange rides, get last minute approval for time off work, etc. We still want people to plan ahead and buy their tickets in advance, but feel that we can smooth this transition by extending outlet walk-in and online sales by a few days.
Online sales will now continue four more days through Tuesday, August 26th at 12:00 PM midnight. Tickets can be purchased here.
Bay Area and Sacramento walk-in ticket outlets will continue ticket sales two more days through the end of business day Sunday, August 24th. Our Reno ticket outlet will continue sales four more days through Tuesday, August 26th. For outlet locations and hours visit our tickets page.
Also, as a reminder all Will Call tickets MUST be collected at the Box Office no later than 12:00 noon Saturday, August 30th.
IMPROVING WOMEN'S SEXUAL HEALTH AT BURNING MAN
This is great information, because as any female on the playa will tell you, this stuff happens.
Andrea Nemerson, a columnist at the San Francisco Bay Guardian, just ran a fabulous column on how women can reduce sexual health problems at Burning Man.
You can view her article on the SF Bay Guardian's site here: http://tinyurl.com/6yuudu
The Women's Community Clinic has created a Burning Woman Survival Kit to accompany Andrea's article. You can view the Survival Kit here: http://www.womenscommunityclinic.org/guide.php
BURNER'S TRUCK STOLEN IN OREGON ... CAN THE COMMUNITY HELP RECOVER IT?
Hey there's a fellow Burner in distress ... perhaps our community up in the northwest can lend a hand? It would be nice to see this rectified. She writes:
If you are in Oregon (around the Eugene/Springfield area), please be on the lookout for a STOLEN PICKUP TRUCK--the primary vehicle for the Pepper Conduit theme camp, containing all of our gear, drinking water, and shade structures. It's a dark blue 1985 Nissan King Cab, with a tall, unusually shaped white canopy and a spare tire on the left rear wheel. Canopy extends pickup bed almost 2 feet in the back, and the canopy has its own taillights.
Was stolen from Junction City, Oregon, sometime between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Thursday, August 21st, 2008. When last seen, it had Washington plates, a Burning Man symbol on the lower right rear canopy door, a small sticker of an octopus on left rear corner of canopy, and racks on top of the canopy.
The truck contains nothing of monetary value, but it does contain some items that are of extreme sentimental value to owners. Namely, our entire theme camp.
The theft has been reported, but it has destroyed our vacation plans. IF YOU SEE THIS TRUCK, please call local police!"
ANNUAL BURNING MAN FASHION SHOW
Greetings & Salutations! This's Hal Robins, a.k.a. Dr. Howland Owll., host of the annual Fashion Show in Center Camp. How about a shout-out to the Burning Man Fashion Show?
Every year -- it's a tradition -- the Burning Man Fashion Show blazes on the Main Stage in Center Camp Cafe, always on Saturday, the Day of the Burn, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM (or as long as we have participants) ...
Come show us your Black Rock City finery! Take a turn on the runway (yes, there will once again be a runway).
Your host, Dr. Howland Owll, will welcome you and narrate your progress across our stage. Be there for the Trashion Show as well as the People's Fashion Show, both devoted to displaying the latest Playa raiment ...
This year, in addition to displaying the ingenuity of the Man's most stylish and imaginative denizens, we will ogle a spectrum of Steam Punk haute couture, and even, it's rumored, pay homage to the theme of The American Dream-- as we're joined by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, the forty-sixth and current Vice President of the United States (Bush declined).
See Mystery Guests, mummers, monsters, nobility & naughtiness. Come one, come all. Don't be shy -- the more the merrier. Surprise us! Let joy be unconfined.
Then go off and prepare for the Burn in your multifold, pre-arranged individual ways.

GET ON THE MAP! THE BLACK ROCK CITY LIVING MAP PROJECT
We are creating a 400 square foot map of Black Rock City, and we need you to come add your landmarks and events to it. Come draw your camp or artwork in its spot on the playa. Mark off the spot where something cool happened. Trace out an interesting journey you went on for others to follow. Write a location-based missed connection for a lost love. Create a treasure map for others to follow.
We have lots of art supplies for you to use to do this. Right now the map is a huge blank canvas with only the streets delineated on it. We need you to fill in the rest. By the end of the week we hope to have a rich map-based record of all the things that made Burning Man 2008. Think of it as your Google Maps for the week, unfolding in real time. The map will be photographed in detail and posted online after the event.

THE MIND'S SHRINE: MAPPING THE MIND OF BURNING MAN
The MindTime guys are making their psychology research into a labyrinthine human computer in the deep playa. Look for the fields of tall flags ... You can't miss it: It's a 10K sq. ft. mandala at 12:15 & 3500' from the Man. With a Kubrickian slab structure inside.
Yes, really: http://www.mindsshrine.com
You can consult The Oracle on the Mind's Shrine site (PDF) before you go, or do it when you enter the Shrine. It takes five minutes or less. Then you go through a series of questions. Your answers sort you into one of nine kinds of thinker, called Archetypes. As you make your way to the slabs at the center, you leave a memento or check out other people's messages. This makes you part of a gigantic human computer built to map the way Burners THINK. (Scary, right?)
Cruise out for a little wander-&-ponder. Use it to screen next year's campmates! Take your sweetie of the hour. Take your dark side. Take the profile. We need your wisdom, insight, and sass to make it work!
