Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 13, Issue #13
February 26, 2009

OK, you ready for this? You sitting down? In a mere matter of DAYS, it's going to be the Burnal Equinox. That's our (possibly overly- clever) name for the exact midpoint between Burns. So think about that ... while it seems like just yesterday we were huffing copious amounts of playa dust (not entirely by choice), here we are suddenly, fast approaching the proverbial hump day of the Burnal Year. After the 28th, it's full speed ahead down the other side of the slope, hurtling inexorably back towards Black Rock City.

Frankly, in the midst of all this daunting news about the global economy, when it feels like things are spinning out of control, Burning Man can start to feel small in the grand scheme of priorities. But this is exactly when Burning Man becomes more relevant than ever. If nothing else, the experience of Black Rock City reminds us that we're capable of standing undaunted in the face of challenge, cultivating creativity in the teeth of necessity, and reinventing ourselves to go beyond limitations that are discovered to be merely figments of the imagination, as we learn to survive -- and thrive -- in one of the harshest environments on the planet.

You don't need to be on playa to remember that, but ... please do, even if you need to go take a good snuffle in one of your totes of playa gear to really bring it home.

OK, so what have we got for you today? Starting on that trajectory to the playa, we have opened our project registration questionnaires for 2009, so it's time to pony up and register your theme camp, art installation and/or mutant vehicle ... read on for more info. We're starting to sell tickets at our Walk-In Ticket Outlets on March 1 ... important details below. You want to perform in the Fire Conclave, spinning fire before the Man burns? Learn how. Help out with the Black Rock Census project, check out some TV Free Burning Man 2008 podcasts (now free on iTunes), hit a recompression event in Vancouver, and take a stroll through some absolutely stunning Burning Man 2008 photos from Waldemar Horwatt.

That's it for this edition ... until next time, be well everybody.

WALK-IN TICKET OUTLET SALES START MARCH 1

Well, it's that time again, our Walk-In Ticket Outlet sales are about to begin!

This year, we're doing things a little differently. Because we love our Outlets, and because we love our participants who patronize them, we're taking some of the lower-tier (read: cheaper) Burning Man tickets from our online pool and giving them to the Outlets to sell! This is us, loving you.

So, starting Sunday, March 1, our Walk-In Ticket Outlets will be selling a limited number of $260 tickets. Once they're gone, they're gone. Then they'll sell tickets at the $280 level, and when they're gone, they're gone. All remaining tickets will be $300. As always, we encourage our participants to purchase tickets at the highest price they can afford, to allow those in need access to cheaper tickets.

When tickets at a price level are sold out at ALL of the Outlets, we'll announce it here in the Jack Rabbit Speaks, and post it on http://tickets.burningman.com .

Important Information About Buying Tickets At Outlets!

Ticket Outlets accept cash and money orders for payment, and often cannot make change, so please be prepared and come with exact change. Outlets do NOT accept any credit cards, debit cards, personal checks, or business checks.

When buying tickets through our Outlets please take a few moments to look around - you'll find that they are filled (not by accident, mind you) with all kinds of supplies that can help you get ready for your playa adventure. Please also remember that these are independent businesses, run by members of our community. They are not charging any additional handling fees ... yes, they do this invaluable service for the community for free.

Do not burden them with phone calls. They cannot answer general Burning Man questions for you (these can be directed to questions (at) burningman (dot) com ). Their hours and addresses are included below. Be sure to treat them with your best Burnerly kindess!

CRITERIA FOR BECOMING A FIRE CONCLAVE GROUP FOR 2009

Open Call for Fire Groups - Deadline March 1st, 2009

Fire is the very heart and essence of life. For it is phenomena rather than substance, one that is revealed, seen, and touched in ways of risk and ritual.

Burning Man's fire activity is ceremony that expands to encompass the spirit as well as the body and mind. The gathering of people, dancing and drumming around a fire, goes back to the beginning of Burning Man and beyond. It is the first basic form of dance that leads to community. By summoning the power of the flame to flow through us, it strengthens and transforms our spirit.

The Fire Conclave is a select group of people who work significant hours before arriving in Black Rock City to choreograph fire performances dedicated to honoring the Man. Their performances create a temporary community, creating fire art as a gift in service to the Man. Under the night sky, before the release of the Man in pyrotechnic delight, the largest convergence of fire performers gather at one time. More fire energy is expressed and let loose than anywhere else in the world.

JEOPARDY! PLEASE DON'T *YOU* GET THIS QUESTION WRONG

Heh. Jonno writes:

"My squeeze is watching the TV quiz show 'Jeopardy' in the kitchen on February 4, and she yells at me to come quick and check out the quiz question: 'Name the event that started on Baker Beach in San Francisco two decades ago with 20 people as a Solstice party and has grown to 49,500 people.'

All three contestants registered blank looks."

KEYPUNCHERS NEEDED TO HELP WITH 2008 BLACK ROCK CENSUS

Did you know that Burning Man conducts a Census on playa each year to determine the demographics of our participants, and collect valuable data that's used by our staff year round? Well, we sure do. Now, our trusty Census Team is looking for people willing to help with data entry, apparently known as "keypunchers" in the parlance. See?:

"We are about to unveil the new Keypunching system and we will need a few good Keypunchers to help us finish the Black Rock Census of 2008. We need speedy, meticulous, patient volunteers to work on data entry from home. We can mail a stack of 200 census forms to you. Please do not sign up for keypunching unless you know you will have the time to volunteer (approximately 5-10 hours per week for 2 months). Also, you will need a reliable internet connection in order to access the Keypunching system. For more information email census@burningman.com."

WALL OF MIRRORS PROJECT (FROM 2003) SEEKS PHOTOS

Iam Soaring (um, cute) writes:

"In 2003, my campmate Alyce Lawrence had a vision of bringing a wall of mirrors to the playa for "Beyond Belief". Her passion for her brainchild was so strong that even though no one could share the vision, they helped her build it. The wall measures 9 feet high and 12 feet wide. The idea was that we ARE art, and that a person's reflection would show just how Beyond Belief we are! The mirrors returned to the playa in 2005 with Camp Narcissism at Center Camp.

Our camp had the opportunity to interact with many participants who reveled at their own reflection in our wall. People would stop to primp and pose, or to hula hoop, or other myriad activities that allowed them to see how incredible they really are. Ironically, Alyce was so gifted by seeing her dream become a gift to the community that she was off celebrating, and was not there to witness most of the reveling that passersby were doing in the mirrors.

The intention for the mirrors is now evolving. We are imagining greater audiences to look upon their own reflection and ponder the product of their own evolution.

We know many people took photos in our mirror, and although we realize that our request means going back through a few years of photos, we are asking if anyone has a photo that was taken in the wall of mirrors, that they get in touch with us and share their photos and stories with us. As we are called to contemplate Evolution, we are hoping to hear how people were affected by the mirrors, and what kind of evolution may have occurred from beholding oneself in our, or any other, mirror(s).

Thanks so much for sharing your memories with us!

RECOMPRESSION, VANCOUVER BC, CANADA - APRIL 2-5

Those kindly (and most polite, as is their wont) folks up there in Canada are throwing an official Burning Man Recompression event, and y'all should get up there. Vancouver's hella nice in April (just pack a raincoat). They write:

"Recompression is an annual gathering hosted by the Greater Vancouver Interactive Arts Society (GVIAS). We create a Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ) that we, as participants, share responsibility for building. Our community experience features a Burn celebration, music, art, performance, workshops, theme camps, fire-spinning, ritual, gift- giving, experiential communication and friendship. We celebrate Recompression in an oceanside rain forest setting on British Columbia's beautiful Sunshine Coast. We are an active, friendly and diverse community, and we've always warmly welcomed other like-minded folk from around the world. Include yourself, include others!

Recompression online registration is through http://www.recompression.com and the 3 day regular price is $160. This includes accommodation and meals.

The theme for this year's recompression is Down The Rabbit Hole.

Art grants are available, and there are many ways to participate, give a workshop, performance, are you a Ranger? Or join a theme cabin, create your own. All information is online at:

http://www.recompression.com

See you there!"
