As promised, we've got the full ticketing plan for tickets to Burning Man 2013 in this edition of the JRS ... and it's right down below ... and if you're still reading this paragraph, we salute you! :-) Seriously though, we've worked really hard to come up with a plan that would serve as many people's needs as possible -- we've listened and learned and made some changes.
We look forward to seeing YOU on playa this year. Happy new year, folks!
The Man burns in 239 days!
BURNING MAN 2013 TICKET SALES
We're excited to announce the sales plan for tickets to Burning Man 2013. Burning Man is making 58,000 tickets available, 3,000 of which were already made available through the Holiday Sale. Details regarding the remaining 55,0000 are outlined below. You'll notice we're doing things differently this year. We've listened, we've learned a lot and we've worked hard to come up with a plan that we believe will meet the needs of the greatest number of people possible.
We've included the general gist below, but you can find all the nitty-gritty details on http://tickets.burningman.com, and answers to your questions in our Ticketing FAQ (http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php) and spiffy new online ticketing forum (http://ticketsupport.burningman.com/).
PLEASE NOTE: Pre-registration is required in order to gain access to any of our sales for 2013. Once you've registered you will be able to participate in the first-come first-served sales. So ... here's the plan:
55,000 Tickets for Burning Man 2013 will be sold as follows (details below):
1. Directed Group Sale (10,000 tickets) - January 30 (Pre-registration required)
2. Individual Sale (40,000 tickets) - February 13 (Pre-registration required, February 6-10)
3. Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) - February 28-July 31
4. OMG Last Chance Sale (1000+ tickets) - August 7 (Pre-registration required, August 2-5)
5. Low Income Ticket Program (4,000 tickets) - Application required
Directed Group Sale: 10,000 tickets
We are once again taking steps to ensure critical theme camp, art installation, and mutant vehicle crews gain access to tickets. In addition to supporting the core social infrastructure of Black Rock City, providing these groups with access to tickets early on will decrease demand (and therefore competition) for tickets in the main Individual Sale. 10,000 tickets at $380 each will be offered to these core crews on Wednesday, January 30. Group leaders will receive an email on Friday, January 11, 2013 with detailed information about how to provide their core group members with access to the Directed Group Sale. These tickets are transferable and eligible for STEP.
Individual Sale: 40,000 tickets
The Individual sale will make 40,000 tickets available at $380 each, with a maximum of 2 tickets per person. To participate in the Individual Sale, you must pre-register between Friday, February 6, 2013 at 12pm (noon) PST and Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 12pm (noon) PST. Detailed information about how to register for this sale will be available in mid-January at http://tickets.burningman.com. This first-come first-served sale begins at 12pm (noon) PST on Wednesday, February 13th. These tickets are transferable and eligible for STEP.
NOTE: There will not be tiered pricing for this sale - all 40,000 tickets are $380. (If you're curious about how this compares with the ticket prices for major festivals, please see "Where Does My Ticket Money Go?": http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/ticketprices.html.)
Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP)
We're bringing back STEP to facilitate the secure, safe, hassle-free exchange of tickets. People wishing to purchase tickets may register to enter the STEP queue starting Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 12pm PST at http://tickets.burningman.com. When tickets are put into STEP by ticket holders, the person at the front of the queue will be offered the opportunity to purchase them (maximum of 2 tickets per person). STEP will close on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 12pm PST. Stay tuned to the JRS for details about the STEP process. Tickets bought through STEP are transferable, but they are ONLY available for pickup at Will Call.
OMG Last Chance Sale: 1,000 tickets
For those who decide at the last minute that they Absolutely Must Go To Burning Man, and to further combat scalpers, we will sell 1000 tickets at $380 each, maximum of 2 tickets per person. In order to participate, you must pre-register between Friday, August 2 at 12pm (noon) PST and Monday, August 5, 2013 at 12pm (noon). Details for how to register will be available at http://tickets.burningman.com. This first-come first-served sale starts Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 12pm PST. Tickets purchased through the OMG sale are transferable but will not be shipped -- they are held for pick up at Will Call only.
Low Income Ticket Program: 4,000 tickets
Our Low Income Ticket program will provide 4,000 tickets ($190/each) to those who provide proof of financial hardship. Our Ticketing department reviews each application and awards tickets to those who are best able to demonstrate need. Applicants should receive a response within 4-6 weeks of submitting their application. Details regarding when and how to apply will be made available shortly. These tickets are non-transferrable and must be purchased and picked up at Will Call in Black Rock City.
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ...
Ticket Fulfillment - June 03 - July 15
Shipping tickets in the summer allows folks a longer window to buy and sell tickets through our Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP), helps put a damper on the scalper market, limits the amount of time scammers have to counterfeit tickets and sell them to unsuspecting Burners, and allows us to include a printed Survival Guide with each ticket. Tickets purchased in the Holiday Sale, the Directed Group Sale and the Individual Sale will start shipping in early June. We cannot give you an exact delivery date since that depends on where they are being sent, the USPS, and other factors outside of our control. But rest assured: you will receive an email when your tickets have shipped.
Don't Panic! A Word About the After-Market
Each year, we see a lively after-market kick up during the summer, when many tickets change hands as people realize they can't make the trip to BRC -- and others realize they can. If you're unable to get a ticket through one of the above means, don't panic! The likelihood of your being able to acquire a ticket is quite good if you keep your ear to the ground and tap into your community. In 2012 tickets to the event became available in August, as they do each year.
What About Scalpers?
A big worry about tickets in 2012 was that scalpers had scooped up a huge number of Burning Man tickets. However, our research shows that less than 1.5% of the total tickets in circulation were available on scalper sites, which is extraordinarily low for an event as large as ours. In order to thwart scalpers this year, we will be weeding out known scalpers through the pre-registration process, and spoiling the market by selling 1000+ tickets on August 7th. But ultimately, stopping scalpers is up to you. As long as there's no demand, they'll be stuck with their supply.
Why Not Implement Identity-based Ticketing (Non-Transferable, Name-on-Ticket)?
There are valid points on both sides of this question, and it's something we've thought about and discussed at length. In addition to logistical and administrative challenges (including increased wait times at the gate), non-transferable tickets would put an end to the acts of gifting that frequently happen with Burning Man tickets -- we don't want to see that tradition die. For more information, see this blog post from Larry Harvey: http://blog.burningman.com/2012/12/tenprinciples/why-not-implement-identity-based-ticketing/
BWB INVITES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN A RADICALLY INCLUSIVE ARTS PROGRAM IN HAITI
Carmen, Executive Director of Burners Without Borders (www.burnerswithoutborders.org) writes:
"The Burning Man community is known for creating extraordinary outcomes in the most unlikely places, and with your participation, we are about to do it again in Haiti. With the launch of Burners Without Borders new artist in residency program, we have an opportunity to put our community's principles into action and significantly transform the lives of artists whose voices have been historically excluded-until now.
BWB has partnered with the wildly successful arts organization, Jakmel Ekspresyon, to create a first of its kind arts program in Jacmel. The goal? To enable marginalized artists, including women, the physically challenged, and those who identify as gay to become financially self-reliant. How? By empowering these artists to learn the skills necessary in design, screen printing and business to eventually earn an income from their talents. We have just two weeks remaining in our Indiegogo Campaign to raise the $10K necessary to build a screen printing studio and to take artists from our community to Jacmel to share their talents and skills.
BWB is asking for help from this art loving community to support the success of this program that will provide a sustainable income for artists who would not otherwise have the opportunity to express themselves or financially benefit from their work. You can support the creation of a new model for radical inclusion in the arts in Haiti. Please click on the following link to learn more and to donate to this project.

LAST CALL FOR BURNING MAN 2012 LOST AND FOUND
While most institutions wait for only 30 days, volunteers have been working on and off since the event ended to return backpacks, cameras, IDs, phones, and other dusty stuff to their rightful owners, and are still at it.
But, the time is very near to shut down 2012 found items reunification efforts. If you haven't yet, you have until Tuesday, January 15th to write lostandfound (at) burningman (dot) com about items lost on the playa.
You can take a look at images from found cameras here:
. . . and stuff we don't have – but other Burners do have – is listed by them on the ePlaya:
Appreciations to Lauren, who led the 2012 return efforts, and created a detailed how-to manual; Bobalou, Kristen, Grace, Kit-Kat, & Duarte, and all the volunteers who have generously donated their time to facilitate happy reunions; Playa Info tech wizard Brillig who fashioned a super-useful dedicated found-items database, and our admin staff at BMHQ, who make sure items are safely shipped back to their rightful owners!
DESERT BIKES FOR OVERSEAS BURNERS
Rat from Reno writes:
"Rats Bikes will open for reservations the same day tickets for Burning Man 2013 go on sale to the general population, or January 15th, whichever comes first. As usual, reservations will be limited to Burners who have to cross an ocean to attend the Burn, unless you've gotten bikes from me for at least 3 of the last 5 Burns. There are many changes this year, so please contact me at: nv_desert_rat (at) nvbell (dot) net for the latest info. Seriously... contact me first!"
SPIRITUALITY AND COMMUNITY: THE PROCESS & INTENTION OF BRINGING A TEMPLE TO BRC
“Burning Man would like to have a conversation that explores what you feel about the Temple and to get your insights on it since it is really YOUR Temple. Our community loves discussions and the Temple is something many of us have very strong feelings about.”
BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS, KNOCKING 'EM DOWN AND PICKING 'EM UP IN NEW JERSEY
Way to go BWB! “This is some of the best leverage of donated dollars that I’ve ever seen,” said Community Foundation President Nancy Kieling. “It’s an example of philanthropy working quickly and in creative ways to help out where other forms of aid are unavailable or slow to arrive.”

LIMITED EDITION 2013 BURNER CALENDAR
"Limited Edition 2013 Burner Calendar: 10% of sales donated to the Burning Man Project
For the past few years I have self-produced limited edition photo calendars. This year I have added a version with photos from my 2012 Playa experience and decided to donate 10% of the sales to the Burning Man Project. The calender is composed of a set of six 4x6 cards printed front and back and a wooden stand. The stand even has a Playa connection as it was made from repurposed redwood from my Burner friend, Opa's, old deck. He made the stands, too! Get yours today and help me sell out (the calendars, not to the man...) Visit www.photokatz.com for more information."
BLISS DANCE NEEDS A FACELIFT

THE GIFT OF LIGHT - JOIN THE COMMUNITY OF BAY LIGHTS SUPPORTERS!
The folks over at the Bay Lights project write:
"The Bay Lights has just launched an interactive grassroots fundraising campaign: http://gift.thebaylights.org/home. You can buy one of the 25,000 LED lights on the bridge by using our interface to select one or more lights at any position on the four towers. You can then keep or gift the light, and you can add your name, photo and a message to it so that viewers will see it when they mouse over the light. In this way you can view the whole community of Bay Lights supporters. You can also memorialize someone in this way. These make great gifts, starting at $50.

FROSTBURN!! - WESTERN PA - FEB 14-18
Crazy-ass Burners ... we love 'em. Our folks in Western Pennsylvania write:
"Visit the Land of Fire & Ice: Frostburn Tickets Now Available
Frostburn is a regional burn that brings Burning Man's desert spirit to Western Pennsylvania's winter tundra, merging Fire and Ice.
Now in our sixth year, we've watched burners create unique ways to share our warmth in a way that only Burners can: with volcano lounges, sweat lodges, flaming bars, and toad art cars. This year we're looking forward to more of the same, with more music, fire, dancing, food, and burns than ever before.
Frostburn is held over President's Day weekend, from February 14th to 18th, with early arrivals starting on February 9th. This year it will be located at Camp Kevin, about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, PA in Brookville, PA.
Tickets are currently available for $35 at frostburn.org/tickets and increase in price on January 11th.
For more info, please visit our website: frostburn.org
See you on the Tundra!"
FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST - NEW ORLEANS, LA - FEBRUARY 23 & 24
Our own fire maven DaveX writes:
"Our friends from the NOLA Burners will be our host for this first Flame Effects workshop of 2013. New Orleans is a awesome place with all kinds of great art and music coming out of it all the time. Well let’s beef up the fire part!
Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art! This class is for you. The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.
The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:
NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA 54 and 58 the LP gas codes.
NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a Live Audience and other codes.
We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials.
The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.
Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays of fire art from several local fire artists!
Check out some pics of past classes:

San Francisco: http://www.monkeyview.net/id/1030/flame_effects_class_sf/index.vhtml
The cost of this 2-Day class will be $150.
Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.
Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of whatever cheap food we can get will be provided each day.
Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists in the garden city of New Orleans and have a blast, no pun intended.
Email your name to Fuelmaster (at) gmail (dot) com to reserve your spot."

GIFTING -- IT MIGHT NOT BE WHAT YOU THINK
There’s so much that can be said of Gifting, one of the 10 Principles of the Burning Man event. “Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.”
Gifting doesn't mean buying armloads of trinkets from your local toy store and marking everyone with your SWAG (that stands for S*** We All Get). The idea behind Gifting is to inspire participants (YOU) to share of yourself, your resources if necessary, but it’s not about that. The hope is to (pardon us while we get woo-woo) mindfully embody the spirit of abundance that gifting carries with it. Most people don't need another glow necklace that will then create MOOP tomorrow morning. They'd probably way rather have your help putting up that dome, flipping those pancakes, or schlepping their ice back to their camp.
