If you get nothing else out of this JRS, please watch this video by Liz Margerum ... it's beautifully done and really captures why we do what we do: http://bit.ly/17uS1OY
We've included photo galleries from the major (and some minor) publications ... and we've made the executive decision to keep the best of the best professional and long-time Burner photographers' galleries in our back pocket. Yep, we're going to dangle those in front of your eyeballs throughout this year, keeping you tantalized as we head through the long season until the next Burn. So look forward to that!
Our next JRS will be a special edition on Burning Man's affiliate groups, what they're up to and how YOU can get involved in the co-creation of the year-round, global Burning Man culture. Stay tuned.
The Man burns in 351 days!
BURNING MAN 2013 WEBCAST SEES RECORD NUMBER OF VIEWERS
We are supremely grateful to John Graham and his team, who have worked to provide live webcast from the playa for over 10 years. John hung up his dusty shoes this year, and we were lucky to have a number of new volunteers step up to take on the webcast effort in 2013.
The proclivities of the playa being what they are, it was a bumpy road to get it up and running, but the crew persevered and got it going! (Thank you for your patience while we ironed out the kinks.)
Despite the hiccups, viewership was up ... we had 132,000 people tune in on the Saturday of the burn this year, up from 125,000 last year.
What went well? What didn't? We want to factor your feedback into our planning for Burning Man 2014 and beyond. So let us know! Email your (thoughtful) thoughts to feedback (at) burningman (dot) com before November 1.
BLACK ROCK CITY CENSUS - MAKE IT COUNT!
If you were a citizen of Black Rock City 2013, we want to count you! The Black Rock City Census is now online ... please fill it out, and share the link with your Burner friends. This information is invaluable to the future of Burning Man! It's the right thing to do.
LOST AND FOUND
Did you lose something on playa and want it back? Did you find something and want to return it to its rightful owner? Don't despair - hundreds of happy Burner-and-stuff reunions have been achieved post-event, so check here before you call your beloved possession gone for good:
HOST A SCREENING OF "SPARK: A BURNING MAN STORY" IN YOUR TOWN!
Steve Brown writes:
"We are opening it up so anyone bring Spark to a theater in their town.
Here's the post on Facebook:
We also have more info on our website at:
Currently this only works in the US but we also are working on how to take the film on tour around the world."
LITTLE HELP? THE MAN WHO BUILDS THE MAN LOST HIS COAT
We don't normally post stuff like this in the JRS, but this is Kim Jong Ilo, we're talking about ... he's the Dear Leader of the ManKrew, who -- you know -- BUILD THE MAN AND ALL? Right, so he's super bummed about this ... let's help him out. His buddy Speshul writes:
"So, Kim Jong Ilo, Dear Leader of the ManKrew, lost his coat on the playa.
The coat is a VERY LARGE faux snow-leopard, hand-made beauty. Cowl hood, turn-back cuffs, pockets. No labels; it was made by his sisters, Lyca Greenfield-Smith and Sylvia Kratins, with pain, suffering and burning sewing machines.
THERE'S A FACEBOOK EVENT WITH PICS:
Spread the word far and wide to anyone you know who was at Burning Man 2013.
The coat was lost from the milk-crate on the back of his bike along False Idol between 5:30 and 8:45 on the evening of Wednesday, August 28.
It's a totally unique, obviously special item of clothing that whoever has it no doubt wishes to return to him. If only there were a way...
Email mark (at) thefoundry (dot) com if you've got a lead."
AROUND THE HORN -- ALL THE WRITINGS (SO FAR) ABOUT BURNING MAN 2013
Now that the dust has (mostly) settled, coverage of Burning Man 2013 is goin' NUTS. Lots of interesting perspectives this year, including first-person stories from virgin Burners, rumors of Burning Man's impending demise, counter-arguments to that contention, even coverage of the Center Camp Cafe in Barista Magazine (yep, it's like that now).
Admittedly, it's a pretty long reading list -- but it's perfect for the occasional bathroom break. :-)

BLM PAYS TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THEIR OWN AT THE TEMPLE
The BLM paid tribute to one of their special agents who passed away this year in a touching ceremony in the Temple of Whollyness in Black Rock City. Here are three stories about the occasion:

RUMORS OF BURNING MAN'S DEMISE ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED
There are a number of articles (ahem, linkbait) and running rumors that Burning Man is dying on the vine because CELEBRITIES and TECH TITANS (who have LOOONG been at Burning Man, if you're keeping track) are RUINING IT ALL. We beg to differ, since these folks are a mere drop in the ~68,000 participant bucket and see also: radical inclusion. But oh boy does the media love its celebrities (and the advertising dollars they bring in).
So yeah, here are some stories -- and rebuttals -- on that subject:

DID YOU FIND CAMERA OR COMPUTER PARTS IN THE ASHES OF THE MAN?
The (amazing) photographer NK Guy writes:
"So this year I took on an ambitious technical project to place cameras on the Man, photographing the burn from the Man's point of view. Unfortunately, because of problems with the WiFi download, the entire project was an ambitious failure. But I'd love to know if anyone out there found any camera, lens, or, more importantly, computer circuit board components in the ashes of the Man the next morning. If you did, please drop me a line, as I'd love to hear from you! Thanks!

BURNERS NEEDED TO INTERVIEW FOR A COMMUNICATION RESEARCH PROJECT
Autumn Bloom writes:
"Hello Fellow Burners!
I am a Communications student at USF beginning a research project on how Burning Man affects attendees’ communication in their day-to-day lives. Ideally I would love to find a wide range of participants, meaning I would like to talk to people who had just had their first Burn all the way to veteran Burners. I would also like to talk with people who have had varying experiences. I want to hear both positive and negative experiences and views. I will be conducting these interviews anywhere between October 22- November 7. If interested please email me over Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/autumn.winston.3 - or at awinston2 (at) yahoo (dot) com. Please be located in the Bay Area and be open (I can keep all names confidential)."

San Francisco Decom is the grandaddy of them all, and it's coming your way, so saddle up! Everything you need to know is here:
CLEAN YOUR SHIZNIT
De-playafy your stuff. Do it now, or regret it later. This is your mother speaking.
A touch of vinegar in some water will help break down the alkaline playa dust, and give you a leg up on the effort. Stale playa smells kinda nasty.
