NO SPECTATORS Weekend - July 28-31
Since 1998, by declaration from then-Mayor Willie Brown, July 31st commemorates NO SPECTATORS DAY in San Francisco. To celebrate it this year -- in true Burning Man style -- here is an ENTIRE WEEKEND offering not one, but five events filled with new and exciting ways to pARTicipate!
1. July 28: 1PM-5PM - Playa Pre-pARTicipation Party & Potluck!
Join us at Burning Man HQ (1900 3rd Street) for a super fun Saturday preparing for the pARTiciPARADE and the PLAYA, including:
- Costume & clothing swap, sewing and crafting workshops: bring bags and bags of costumes, clothing, and items to transform or gift! We hope to see everyone bring a bag and leave with one!!!
- Blondie's Bling Workshop: learn how to make anything and everything you wear shiny, glowy, and flashy, from the Queen of bling-bling.
- Bike repair and decorating: expert bicyclists will assist you in changing those old tires, or applying playa-worthy lube to your chains.
- Playa-worthy Pot-Luck & BBQ: you know what that means; bring lots of food and beverages to share with all your new and old friends!
- Bamboo for Burners: an interactive crash course in bamboo taught by Gerard a 2006 art grant installation. Learn about the many possible uses of this remarkable material around the world and share ideas for its use on the Playa. Tools and materials will be provided by Gerard, but come prepared with a sketchpad and pen.
All this and MORE at the BMHQ rear parking lot and downstairs kitchen. To enter, please bring a bag of art supplies and costumes/clothing to gift, and/or food to share! Bring your projects and let's work on them together! E-mail firekitty(at)burningman(dot)com if you'd like to lead a workshop, bring your sewing machine or have other related ideas. - FREE and ALL AGES!
2. July 28: 6PM-12AM - Paradise Lost!
Laughing Squid will host their "Paradise Lost" event, which is also a partial benefit for The Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF). 6pm-Midnight at Flora Grubb Gardens, 1638 Jerrold Avenue, SF - $10 at the door. Info.
3. July 29: 2PM-5PM - The 4th Annual Burning Man pARTiciPARADE!
Meet at the big tree in Buena Vista Park on Haight Street at 2PM to begin our unofficial 12 step program in zaniness! Our pedestrian journey into radical street amusement leaves the park at 3PM sharp, makes 12 stops from cancan to carousel ride, and concludes with roller disco in Golden Gate Park. You WILL be a tourist attraction, so wear outrageous colors, stripes, dots, or your best parade dress trash. Bring flower petals, mobile instruments/noise makers and rolling sculpture you can push, pull, BE or carry with you on sidewalks and park lawns. BE the art and put a little freak back in Haight Street! FREE and ALL AGES!
4. July 29: 7PM-10PM - SF Monthly Fire Jam at Burning Man HQ
For fire performers, drummers and those in the Fire Conclave or interested in it. - Front parking lot. FREE and ALL AGES but close adult supervision required.
5. July 31: 7PM-10PM - Burning Stories Night at Burning Man HQ
Bring stories about when you realized you were no longer a "spectator". - Back parking lot around the fire. FREE and ALL AGES, but stories may involve adult language. You do not need to tell a story to attend and storytellers/time may be limited if a large turnout.
Whew! It's almost enough for a What Where When... this is your call to pARTicipate!!!
Also: it’s never too soon to prepare for what will surely be an awesome Decompression Heat The Street FaIRE! on October 7th! E-mail flambelounge(at)burningman(dot)com TODAY to reserve a space for your art, theme camp, mutant vehicle, or performance.
