LAMPLIGHTERS

Lamplighters Village

Q. Who camps at Lamplighters Village? Why?

A. Lamplighters who are committed to helping with Lamplighter's work camp in Lamplighter Village. The "why" is as varied as the Villagers. We offer Villagers an opportunity to be more involved in the event. We are centrally located where we start the nightly procession near Center Camp. We all chip in to create fabulous nightly meals in our kitchen. Our setup crew builds us a lounge and bar where we host two parties and Lamplighters bask in the midday shade. You are welcome! We are more than a theme camp, we're part of the Burning Man organization and we have a job to do. We are honored to be a part of the Lamplighting tradition that began in 1993.

Q. I don't know anyone, and I'm coming alone. Is there space for me? It's my first Burning Man.

A. Yes. And by the way, you are our favorite people. You have a home at Lamplighters. All are welcome.

Q. If I camp with Lamplighters, do I have to work every day?

A. Sure, and why not? We don't mind asking this of you since we gladly do this ourselves. The work is fun and rewarding. Since it only takes around two to three hours each day we find it doesn't take much to do, but it gives back A LOT. So, be prepared to work (most) everyday you're here. We understand you're on vacation. We do expect more from the Villagers than the average participant, but we're not lunatics. Enjoy yourself... and work too....

Q. I want to camp with Lamplighters, but my friends aren't interested in Lamplighting. What should I do?

A. You should tell your friends that Lamplighting is part of the deal, and that participating during the event is a part of the experience. The groove in the village is pretty infectious. If they agree to work most nights, that's all we ask. If your friends have no interest in working, you should probably camp somewhere else with them, or even better, dump your deadbeat friends, camp with us, and see who has had a better experience by the end of the event. Also, we have many resources within the village that are for the pleasure and comfort of the Lamplighters. This is what we provide in return for what we ask for. No freeloaders please....

Q. Do I need to reserve a camp space?

A. We fill the Village as we go and as people arrive. We have a few contingency plans for when we fill up, which we will. Please let us know you are camping with us, however, we do not reserve specific spaces. Lamplighters Village is just off Center Camp so wherever you stay in the Village you are still right in the middle of Black Rock City. That's an awesome place to be.

Q. How much space can I get?

A. This is a judgment call. (Note we have a communal lounge/shade space, though many Lamplighters like to bring personal ones.) Clearly people with the resources and numbers to start their own theme camps should do that. However, we have had groups within Lamplighter Village with multiple cars, clusters of tents, and a big shade/chill space. Medium sized camps work just fine within Lamplighter Village. If you have a nice, good looking set-up, then you bet we want you in our camp. If you have a great camp idea and/or need a large space, let us know, and we can make an arrangement. Plan on showing up BEFORE the event starts though.

Q. Can I stay in Lamplighters Village in my RV?

A. Yes you can. We have no problems with RV's and many established Lamplighters wouldn't consider coming to Burning Man without one.

Q. What should I tell my friends about how to find me in Lamplighters Village?

A. Lamplighters Village is on the map of Black Rock City that you get when you arrive at the event. Tell your friends to look at their map.

Q. What should I do when I get to Burning Man?

A. Park your car quickly, and set off on foot towards Center Camp. Find us BEFORE you drive in. The Greeters and most of the people you come across will be able to help you find Center Camp and/or the Lamplighters. The location of Lamplighters Village and the Lamplighters Workspace are on the map of Black Rock City. When you find us and can drive in safely, we will walk with you around the Village and show you a number of places that would be good for your camp. Then RELAX. You've been driving for hours. Sit down, and think about where you want to camp. You may decide that you don't want to camp with us. You've already seen what we have to offer. This is your experience, and it won't hurt our feelings. After you've calmed down, set up your living space. Now acclimate, and remind yourself that this is where you decided to spend your vacation.
