FUNDRAISING FOR YOUR PROJECT
Got an art project for Burning Man that you need to raise funds for? If you conform to our guidelines (see below), we'll be happy to include you on our Support a Project page, which we regularly promote to the Burning Man community. Please note that this should not be your only solution for fundraising. We strongly encourage you to engage your immediate community ... it's part of the collaborative process!
Create a Kickstarter
Create a fundraising project on Kickstarter.com. Your project must conform to the Kickstarter guidelines (which happen to mirror our own). Be sure you mention in your application that yours is a project for Burning Man. Any questions about how it works are answered on their Frequently Asked Questions page.
Send Us Your Widget
Once you have your Kickstarter page up, send an email containing your project's Widget Embed Code (click "GRAB THE WIDGET" on your Kickstarter page, copy the code there, and paste it in the body of the email) to fundraiser(at)burningman(dot)com. Our web team will add your project to our Support a Project page as soon as they can (it could take up to two weeks).
If yours is a Mutant Vehicle project, you must register and obtain approval from the Department of Mutant Vehicles for your vehicle prior to submitting your Kickstarter widget to this page. Learn about the DMV process here.
If yours is a media project of any kind that involves photography or video taken on playa, you must register and obtain approval from the Media Team prior to submitting your Kickstarter widget to this page. Learn about the photography/video process here.
Theme Camp Projects
If your project is an art installation that resides in or is part of your theme camp, your funding must only go towards that project, rather than your general camp expenses. Stating this explicitly in your Kickstarter is a good idea.
If you're offering shwag as a pledge gift, be aware that you're not permitted to use the Burning Man logo on these items without special written permission, which is not generally granted in instances when money is changing hands (so that the logo is reserved exclusively for the sharing of gifts, not for fundraising). You can contact us at press(at)burningman(dot)com if you're not sure about your idea, but first, read up about our trademark policy.
Also, please be mindful of commodifying the Burning Man experience (e.g. VIP access to your Mutant Vehicle, private party events, etc.) when you're coming up with reward ideas. Burners will be the first to let you know when you're veering into this territory, and it may backfire on you if it seems too much like you're trading special access for donations, or otherwise "selling off" pieces of the Burning Man experience.
Burning Man will only publicize the "Support a Project" page generally, and will not promote individual fundraising efforts, except in exceptional circumstances, based on our discretion. It's your responsibility to promote your own Kickstarter to your community.
Why We're Using Kickstarter
- Kickstarter provides a quality, media-rich format for your fundraising effort.
- They handle all the payment stuff.
- Your donors ONLY pay if you reach your funding goal; thus avoiding funding a project that doesn't have enough money to be completed.
- You can offer shwag for different funding levels.
- They only do fundraising for projects, which is what we want to facilitate, too.
- Their commission is just 5% of your funding, only IF you reach your goal.
- It's a great, standardized way for Burning Man to aggregate all the fundraising efforts out there.
- Successful projects usually end up receiving 120% of their funding goals.
