Video Acculturation

OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: BURNING MAN VIDEO ACCULTURATION SERIES!

Definition: ac·cul·tur·a·tion
1. A process by which the culture of an isolated society changes on contact with a different one.
2. A process by which a person acquires the culture of the society that he/she inhabits.

Remember your first time at Burning Man, finally seeing everything you'd been hearing about? Well, if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a thousand pictures (or, more accurately, about 30 frames per second).

Every year, returning participants wonder how to share their tips, tricks, and first-timer advice; and how the Survival Guide, Ten Principles, and other "Burning Man Essentials" can be best communicated to the next generation of newcomers.

Well, we think the answer is: VIDEO!

Burning Man is calling all filmakers, actors, actresses, directors, vloggers, auteurs ... acrobats, giant bunnies and sumo wrestlers! We want YOUR submissions to share as part of the Burning Man Video Acculturation Series!

Dust off those cameras and old-school Burning Man footage, or grab your friends and let the tape roll! Just create and send in your short films and video, being careful to adhere to the requirements below. The contest will accept rolling submissions and the first deadline is August 1, 2010.

A panel of participant/judges will help select the best and brightest submissions for the Burning Man Video Acculturation Series. Winning videos will be featured and shared broadly to help acculturate brand new participants – and to help illustrate the principles and experiences of Black Rock City to the larger world. The top video submissions for Round 1 (Deadline August 1, 2010) will receive:

+ Promotion on the Burning Man Website, Jack Rabbit Speaks, Facebook Page and Twitter feed;
+ possible inclusion in future film festivals, gift DVD’s, etc.
+ a chance to collaborate on future projects!
+ and inclusion at a special red-carpet "Movie Premiere" at Burning Man 2010!

What do YOU wish people knew about the REAL Burning Man experience? Whether it's video-blog style instructions from you and your favorite playa expert, or a high-production film noir starring all your friends, the options are limitless.

Possible Film Topics Include:

+ Acculturation: What did you wish you had known before you got to Black Rock City?
+ Ten Principles: Illustrate or teach others about one or any of our principles?
+ History: Got a classic piece of video that illustrates a special piece of art, theme camp, or performance and why it matters to you?
+ "We Are Everywhere": Burning Man happens every day, all over the world. How can you explain what Burning Man is beyond the week in the desert?

Acculturation Video Series Requirements:

- Videos must be under 5 minutes
- Videos must be posted on Youtube, Vimeo, BlipTV, Flickr, or another free video hosting platform that allows embedding and linking. Please do NOT email actual video files – host them elsewhere and share the link instead.
- All content in the video must be yours OR you must have written permission to use it.
- Please credit all performers and artists (either in the video or on your webpage or in your email to us).
- You must have permission from ALL featured individuals to use their image in your piece. (NOTE: Please be aware of participant privacy, as you would for any public video shot at the event. If you shot video with a personal use registration tag, it's okay to use that footage for this project, but if your friends or campmates are recognizable in the video, it's policy -- and really, good etiquette -- for you to let them know you now plan to share the footage with a much wider audience than your own friends and family. If you can't manage to contact recognizable individuals in your shots, use other footage instead).
- By posting and submitting your film/video for this Video Call, you agree to let Burning Man share (and possibly excerpt or remix) your work for "Burning Man related projects."
- All submissions must be sent to cameratales(at)burningman(dot)com with a working URL link and a credit list by August 1, 2010 to be eligible for the first round review.

Winning submissions for Round 1 will be announced before the 2010 Event.
